Bulldogs and Chewing

Hi,

Quick question.  I have an 11 year old female bulldog named Acoya.  I have been around a lot of other dogs, and none chew even remotely closely to the way she does.  Shes not inappropriate, she only chews the toys shes allowed, but man, does she chew.  When given a solid bone to chew on (or really anything) she enters a trance even at 11 years old.  This isnt some teeth adjustment thing, this is different.  Her eyes roll back in her head and she chews, she doesnt care whats going on around her and shechews, and chews, and chews.  Other dogs work bones, break them etc, but shes something different.  So, my quesiton.  is this common to bullys or do I just happen to have an obsessive one?

Joe

I've had both types

it seems to be soothing/relaxing to some and others seem to be frantic trying to destroy the toy.

My bulldogs have all loved to chew

Some chewed their own toys to bits. Others chewed by shoes, the furniture, clothes, bowls, books or anything they could get their teeth on. You are lucky yours does't go after your things. They have powerful jaws and love to use them.

My boy chews on his stuff too

He has tons of toys and chews on the appropriate ones.  When he grabs one of his antlers he starts with throwing it around for a bit then he chomps away for a while then I will notice he starts to get quiet and he is starting to suck on it and knaw a little and then he is sleeping zzzzzzz lol.

Tuffy is a powerful chewer too

He goes nuts when he gets a raw bone or bully stick or new chew toy. Your expression about the eyes rolling back in your bullies head is tuffy exactly! So I guess even at 11 the chewing habit is still going strong!

kibbys eyes totally roll back! its kinda creepy...

i thought it was just her!!! she is obsessed with stuffed animals, she gets them, destroys them within 24 hrs to find the squeeker, chews on it, then spits it out. she doesn't like any rubber toys without fuzz. i have found that those nylon stronger stuffed animals last sometimes 2-5 days.. fuzzy tennis ball like sqeeky toys sometimes last 2 weeks. once she gets a new toy, she can't wait to jump into bed at get to it... she chews the face or the arms, works it , until the fabric is compromised and then once she gets to the stuffing, she will pull it out methodically until she can get to the squeeker. she is so obsessed, we have to hide toys in the car, otherwise she will sit and stare at the drawer or hiding area and cry until we give in to her. she is nuts!

she will not go for a walk without a toy in her mouth the whole time. my house looks like a snowstorm from all the stuffing.  i believe we have spent close to $100000000 for stuffed animals for her.

the first time i saw her eyes rolling back, it scared me!! its kinda like a sucking, relaxing, thing, she knocks herself out to sleep usually after she gets a good chew in!

Is an awesome chewer.  In fact the vet said that whatever he is chewing on--keep it up, his teeth look amazing.  He can chew for hours.

Beatrix is a chewer like

Beatrix is a chewer like that. We've had to really hunt for the toys that will last her any length of time because of it, she just gets into the "zone" and chews, and chews, and chews.

Mr. Higgins chews obsessively too

He also goes into a kind of trance, like your bully. He broke a tooth on a deer antler. He can chew through a tennis ball in seconds. Tire biters are no problem for him to get through. Destroying toys seems to be his mission in life. Thank goodness they are making better toys. There are really some now that he cannot get through as much as he tries. He is a good boy and has never touched anything but his toys. My last bully (RIP Arthur) was not as obsessive but did love to chew.
