Bad allergies

Help anyone! I feel so bad my dog Lou is scratching ly. He was on Zyrtec did anyone try the oral medication that you put a few drops in his drinking water. I changed my Vet, he placed Lou on a new diet Royal canine Hydrolyzed protein diet. He is 16 months old. The New vet put him on Hydroxyzine 50 mg 2 X per day. My wish is to get them off all medicines.

Royal Canin is not a good food...

it has grains and fillers and no wonder he is itching.  Look for a high quality grain free food, preferably fish based.  Fromm Trout is good, Zignature is another awesome brand.  Salmon is good also.  Try using filtered drinking water, if you have reverse osmosis that's great, otherwise you can get a Britta pitcher and give him water with that.  The is an allergy med called Apoquel that is good for itchiness if it's bad, otherwise Benedryl or other allergy meds should help.  Our vet used to give us Temeril P for our boy who was allergic to grass and that worked well but had a small amount of prednisone in it.  You can also have allergy testing done for a couple of hundred dollars which will tell you what he's allergic to.  But I would start with the food change and remember it can take 6 weeks to see improvement after changing food.  We also give our guys a NuVet daily (order online) and a Pearl probiotic.

Thanks for the response

We were giving him Natural Planet Grain Free Rabbit & Salmon, and NuVet tablet everyday. So we switched vets and  he suggested the new diet. I feel so bad that I just don't know what to do

Hi, I agree with Kathy...

Royal Canin isn't a great food. The are a lot of grain free brands available. One that I have used is Earthborn Holistic, the fish variety. Lots of dogs that have allergies do pretty well on a salmon or fish protein when they don't do well on a beef or chicken protein. There is also Wellness Simple, it is a very limited ingredient food that is easily digested and some dogs just do really well on it.

I give a cranberry supplement with vitamin c in it once daily in their breakfast. It keeps them from getting urinary tract infections, which can cause lots of issues. I also give a joint supplement daily, but I don't give anything else. I would try holding off the NuVet tablet and see if that helps at all, it may be a little much for the system. Try giving a probiotic (ask your vet for a tube of it, or yu can find a product called Probios at most feed stores) a couple of times daily, as well as a tablespoon of plain canned pumpkin, not the pie filling kind, just plain pumpkin. That will help firm the stool.

Good luck!
