Anyone have a bulldog with bad hips?

Jesse has been limping off and on, especially when she first gets up from lying down.  The vet did xrays and said her one hip has no socket and the other one isn't great.  We have an appt for an ortho consult, but I'd like to hear some first hand experience.  I don't want to rush her into a surgery if it's not necessary but I also don't want her next 4 or 5 years to be painful.

Our Nugget is 6 yrs old and she has bad hips.

We don't allow her to use stairs and have runners all over the house so she don't slip.  She has been on Meloxicam for quite awhile. This does help, but like any medication it is not good for long term especially with her age.  We started her on Adequan injections and the results have been amazing.  She is playing like I have not seen her do for so long.  I am extremely hesitant with any surgeries after losing Dooley in June.

Thanks Janis...

Glad to hear she's doing well on adequan, we have Chester and Newman on it and plan to start her tomorrow to see if it helps.  She's on rimadyl right now and it seems to come and go, she's very stiff and gimpy when she gets up but once she gets moving, she does better.  I know that bulldog hips are not like other dogs, but I wasn't at the vet's with her and the vet  scared hubby with her diagnosis.  We are scheduling a consult with an orthopedic doctor so we will see what he has to say.  She's such a sweet girl, I just want her to be pain free and enjoy her life.  I'm not too afraid of surgery for her since she's had three litters of pups in her life plus a palate resection and she does fine with anesthetic, thank goodness.

Well, Sophia never had real bad hips....

But when I first got her the vet said she did! He said she would be surgical by the time she was a year old, so I started her on Glucosamine Sulfate, 1000mg daily. She never did have surgery, she was just fine, but she also was very young when the vet told me how bad her hips were.

In your situation, I would hear what the ortho has to say. Until then, I would definitely put her on a good joint supplement. I currently use Cetyl-M on my guys, but I can't really tell that it does a whole lot more than just the Walmart bought Glucosmine Sulfate!

Yes, Sophie started having problems

at age 5; but her hips are not bad enough to need surgery, nor as bad as your Jessie's----sorry she's having problems, and I'm sure

an ortho specialist will be able to help.  Sophie also had some Adequan injections, and the only reason we've stopped them temporarily

is because our vet said it's impossi-bull to get any recently.  He also has her on a very strong, chewabulll supplement.  She hasn't

limped in a longgg time, thank Goodness.  I hope Jessie feels better soon!!!

another issue the specialist might look for

is to check Jesse's knees----I just remembered, on top of arthritis in her hips, Sophie ALSO has a

"subluxated patella"----floating kneecap.   There's not a treatment for it per se; but I suppose the Adequan

and chews were also prescribed for that, in addition to her hips.   Of course the MAIN thing we need to do with

Sophie is to keep her from JUMPING and/or slipping on our wood/ tile floors.  More (( hugs )) to Jesse!

Thanks guys, we just started her on adequan...

and hopefully that will help!  We now have all three of them on it.  She doesn't jump or get on furniture, we do have wood look tile floors though.  I'm thinking about getting those nail attachments that are grippers, I think groomers can attach them to keep them from slipping.  We have an appt with the ortho tomorrow morning, so we will see what he has to say.  Once she got over her vet visit, she's been walking around pretty good.
