Amikacin Sulfate injections

Has anyone here ever used this antibiotic?  Nugget has reoccuring UTI's.  The particular one she has now is e-coli, but this strain is resistant to all other antibiotics.  I am making an appt with the specialist to check into having the vulvoplasty surgery.

I haven't heard of it...

But I had the same problem this Sophie. I always doubled down on the cranberry supplement I gave her (it was a 4200 mg cranberry plus vitamin c supplement), that cleared her issues up. On the rare time it didn't clear up a uti, I used prescribed antibiotics, but haven't heard of the one you ask about.

We had this problem with Oreo...

years ago.  she no longer cleared up and she had another.  The vet put her on a drug called Methanamine Hippurate which he told me would cleanse her urine so her infections would stopped.  It worked for her and we had her on it the rest of her life.  It was pretty inexpensive too.  Her infections were predominantly e-coli.

I will ask him about this drug after I get this UTI cleared up.

One of her main problems is she has to much skin back there that is trapping the bacteria.  For what I have spent on antibiotics and cultures,  she could of had the vulvoplasty surgery which may reduce the amount of UTI's.  This last antibiotic, I about fell on the floor when they told me the cost.  Plus with this particular drug, she needs her kidney enzymes checked twice while she is on it.  Side effects are kidney damage and hearing loss which scares me,  but this strain of e-coli is resistant to everything she has had in the past.

That poor pumpkin....

I sure hope you get a good result with whatever treatment you pursue. I'm so sorry you and she are going through all of that!

The Methanamine might help in that case...

The urine would be clean by the time it got trapped so no more uti. At least that's the way the vet explained it to me.   It worked for Oreo, hope it will be  a possibility.

I am currently on this PERSONALLY - Methanamine Hippurate

Ever since I became paralyzed 2 years ago, I must self catherize 5-6 times a day, I am (Personally) prone to UTI's --  I have been on Methanamine Hippurate (its described as a low dose maintenence antibiotic) and also a high dose of Vitamin C -- AGAIN.. this is ME, HUMAN MAN 200Lbs -- I have not had a UTI in almost 2 years now -- and at one point, I was in a situation that I had to re-use my cath's. So if I didnt get one THEN....

How will it do for our Bullies? I dont know... but for us Humans.. I can attest ... it works.

I was also given this advice...    UTI's are more common in 'Sweet' or 'Neutral' PH environments --  where as the vitamin C makes your urine acidity.
