I'm sure there will be a logical, valid reason for what I'm about to ask, but our new girl Amelia has literally played in our off leash area with the following: Female Wolfhound mix, female pug mix, male american labrador, male boxer, female cattle dog/healer mix, and has walked with and interacted with many other mixes and purebreds here in the past 4 days.
We have one large, neutered yellow lab named Tank who is really a sweet, but imposing (at 109lbs) dog. He is friendly with numerous other dogs in the campground although there are a few who who can't stand him, including our campground owner's female pit-mix even though she & tank played together as puppies.
Amelia has literally "gone after" Tank twice including this morning for no apparent reason whatsoever -
1st time: We were sitting outside with friends and their male 13yr old lab (dogs were both laying down) when Tank & his owner approached. Amelia is the one who charged HIM.
2nd time: This morning while behind our office counter, and in fact I'm working on "leave it" with her own treats as people and other dogs come in as we pass out treats here in the office.
After the 1st episode with Tank I have handed his owner the treat to give to him instead of allowing him to come around the corner, etc. Amelia jumped completely over a large piece of plywood blocking the entrance, as well as the trash can in front of it, to go after him again. Scared the living crap out of me even though I have many years experience with dogs (used to train field trial dogs) so I've participated in several unforgiving altercation breakups.
No one has any injuries but now I'm wondering could it possibly be the OWNER himself who is the trigger?
Any and all insight appreciated here.
That title should have read "Dog" singularly.
As she's had zero issues other than tons of fun with all other dogs but one.
Strange...
maybe she senses something you can't see. In any case I would keep her distance from him. Fighting is a learned behavior and you dony want to keep letting it happen. Make sure she's on a leash when he's around.
Oh, Yes
On a leash at all timesm, even behind the counter with me. We just could not figure it out with the lab. And they (lab & Dad) their times to stop into the office for treats. The lab's owner is about 6'4 and wears a ballcap all the time but her prior owner wore a ballcap or hat at all times so I don't think its the hat. Just don't know if she senses something really wrong with the person himself.
As I mentioned, there seem to be a number of pups that don't interact well with that particular lab. And even his owner has referenced other dogs seem to "pick on" his dog Tank wherever they go. Now I really wonder about it overall, because it's not generally 109lb labs that get "picked on."
I will just continue to let her play with the known, friendly pups that she has already had a good time with.
