Tail pocket

Brother is still having tail pocket issues.  I have animax, nothing,  Lanacane, so,so ,but does not cure.....Vagisil...not much, keeps coming back...Tucks,,helps but does not cure.

Discharge is brown and some pink, and would smell if ya let it go.  We wash it under the shower, and wipe dry and use one of these above, but not one seems to do the job

I wonder is it time for Antibiotics?

I would check with your vet at this point.

See if they want to do a course of antibiotics. I don't know what else to recommend. I wash Sophias pocket out about once a week with the shower head. I use baby shampoo to clean it really well in the pocket, then rinse it out very well. I dry it with paper towels to make sure it is the least damp I can get it, then I put a dab of Desitin in the pocket to repel any moisture left. She does pretty well with that routine.

I hope you find the solution for your bully.

okay, this may be a silly question...

but what/where exactly is the tail pocket? Oliver and Sebastian are my first bully's and I have no idea what I should be watching out for.

Not silly

If your pups have a tail that curls, under it is where we are talking adout.  It forms a pocket .  If the dog has a straight tail no pocket.  It gets dirty, and yeasty, and sometimes needs to be cleaned, and sometimes gets sore.  I wipe with baby wipes after each poo, and in a downward motion to avoid sweeping stuff under their tails.  Brothers is sore now.

Onslow has a straight tail and no pocket BUT

His butt hole is lower then his tail so poop can get stuck up at the crook (base) of the tail.  Not a pocket but still a spot that needs to be cleaned out regularly.  ;)

Not all have pockets

For some reason it has become that every dog has a pocket.  Not is not true.  A real pocket is an indentation (hole) under the tail at the base.  This hole is deeped then the bum causing a pocket where "stuff" can get captured.  All tails should be kept clean underneath but too much cleaning with damp cloths (ie baby wipes) can cause its own problems.  The tail needs to be kept dry.  I do not clean my dogs tails daily, nor do I have to clean butts after each poo.  I used to have to clean MacKenzie's tail often, but since taking weight off him his tail is staying very clean and he isn't having problem with poo droplets.  The tighter the tail the worse of a problem you will have. Typically short curled tails will be worse the a straighter tail.  An dog that can wag and raise their tail at the base is more likely to not have any tail problems. As your puppies grow their tails will get tighter. Familiarize yourself with the structure of the tail from base to tip. Knowing where the tip is at is important, because sometimes with a very tight tail it can start to grow inward into the body.  I have a friend that had a bitch with a pocket 4 inches deep.  Very difficult to keep clean, dry and yeast free.  This is just another thing that reputable breeders consider when breeding. A good tail is important for the over all health of the dog and if they have bad tails, with lots of problems then the tail may need to be amputated.

4 inches deep? My word

I thought one knuckle deep was bad.

Steve I would try this Dr Bronner's *chum's tail pic*

http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/store/en/browse/sku_detail.jsp?id=DR-7016&s...

In the shower it is a miracle soap.  Robin recommended it to me for regular bathing but I tried it in the pocket wooohooo!.  I had to use it on Chumlee's pocket every 3 days for a week.  His tail was pretty bad.  The snow is melting here and the puddles are everywhere.  The grass is when and if his tail gets wet or near water the nightmare starts all over.  I try very hard to keep his butt dry when he is outside but it is tough when he is playing with other dogs in the park and rolling over for tummy rubs when other people greet him.  Chum's is rolled into a cinnamon roll so tight i can't get my finger between the very last part and the tip of the tail.  Luckily the tip of the tail is sticking outwards.  It is really weird because he has nice poops but he has to have his butt wiped after he poops, his tail bun covers his "whistle."  After his butt baths with the soap I pat his tail dry as best I can and then I check on it later and dry more, seems like it is never dry sometimes.  I have even stuffed a mini shamWOW in his pocket when he was little and there was more room.  He won't do the hair dryer because he hates things that blow air and tries to squish it with his mouth.  Here is a pic of his "incorrect" tail, sorry about the "package" lol.

nice tushy, Chum...

I just want to squeeze your little butt cheeks if you really had some. Chum's tail looks kind of like Oliver and Sebastian's. Their tails are definitely not straight, but curl around. I'll have to check them tomorrow, I'm at the hospital with my son for one of his chemo treatments but we're going home tomorrow.

How often are you washing

under the shower and how are you drying?  Are you using a pet blower/dryer?  If not and you are just towel drying then you are not getting the tail dry.  It can take hours for the hair under and around a tail to dry, especially if they have a lot of hair around the tail.

My suggestion is to stop washing him under a shower.  Buy a spray like Vetericyn or try the TPro Cut and Wound spray w/Tea Tree Oil. Use only dry cosmetic cotton squares when cleaning, spray the stuff on the cotton square and clean with that and stop using a moist towel/wipe.

Thanks

Washing once a week twice this week.  She is gonna stop at Petco and get food this PM so she is gonna get a EarthBath Hotspot and itch product  with TTO, and I'm gonna use dry pad as you suggested.  I'm also gonna order some Vetericyn as I haven't seen it in the stores.  Thanks again .
