sickness on exercise

Hi All

I have owned my bully for only 3 weeks.. every time we take him out for a walk he is sick.. can vary as to when on the walk and how much there is.. it doesn't bother him and he carries on as normal but it's not nice for him and surely can't be doing him any good.

He is 3 and his previous owner did say he can be sick if he gets excited?

We have had days when we haven't taken him out and he is fine. We have tried putting his harness on about an hour before a walk so he's calmed down and not to excited but still the same. We have also taken him before breakfast and a few hours after so he's had time to digest his food.

I don't want to not take him out as this is unfair on him as he loves being out but I don't want the constant sickness to do any damage.

Any ideas?

Thank you

Elongated Palate. He needs to see a vet.

There is a list of Bulldog knowledgeable vets on the homepage of this website. Find yourself one of those and take your new dog in to see him or her. Sounds very much like your dog needs Elongated Palate surgery very much, it isn't bad and it will give your dog a longer, healthier life. Do it sooner than later, your dog could die from it if overheated from excitement or over exercised.

He has been to the vets twice

He has been to the vets twice since we have had him as he had an ear infection.. The vet seemed to think it could be nerves or being anxious?

I will have a look at the vets on here.

Thanku

Should have read elongated soft palate...

And your vets diagnosis is precisely why you need a bulldog knowledgeable vet! I hope you can find one soon.

How does he sound when he's excited and...

when he's not?  Is he loud, does he sound like a freight train?  Does it take him a while to calm down?  We are having our 4 year old girl evaluated for palate surgery next week. She gets very loud  breathing when she's excited and it takes a while to calm her down. Seeing a vet that's got a lot of Bulldogs in the practice is the best thing.

He doesn't sound loud and

He doesn't sound loud and takes him a few minutes to calm down.. He snores but that's it? He gets excited when we get home if we've been out but isn't sick? Would pet insurance cover the op do you know?

Thanku

By "sick" do you mean vomiting?

I have seen this in both my bulldogs over the years. Yes, you need a bulldog savvy vet for sure. Airway issue is the first thought, however the palate cannot be evaluated properly unless the dog is under aneasthesia. Just going by the symptoms, you really need a proper 2nd opinion. Both my bullies ended up having palate resections and everted saccules removed with great benefit and no more vomiting. Best of luck.

Yes, I would forgo the exercise...

until you see the vet, there is always a slight fear of aspiration whenever they vomit.  It's possible it's a totally different problem than the palate, but hopefully the vet you see knows more about bulldogs.  Let us know what he/she says.

Will do.. keep you

Will do.. keep you posted.

Thanku

Yes, for now curb the exercise

Since it is exercise related. Things like vomiting can end up being a big can of worms. Palate issues is the first thought. My Mr. Higgins (RIP Aug/04-Dec 29/14) was a vomiter. One thing I did that really helped was to feed him 3 times a day. Big difference. Since his airway was fixed, he often still vomited, then came the loose stools. Vet ended up caling it IBD which I agreed with. That was just the last year of his life. He was an early morning vomiter and his third and last meal of the day was late at night. Pepto Bismol helps with the vomiting and is relatively harmless but check with your vet first especially for the dose. Just my experience, hope it helps. I think bullies are vomiters. I`ve had 2 now. Yes I was always freaked out about aspiration and the pneumonia. He never did aspirate, thankfully.

I am very bored since he passed 6 weeks ago so I seem to be constantly on the internet. looking up bulldog related stuff. It is so hard not having a bully around.
