You might want to try a grain free food and filtered water. Newman had horrible red stains when we got him. We put him on TOTW pacific stream (salmon) grain free and his stains disappeared in three weeks. Completely. We also use water from the RO instead of regular tap water. We didn't put anything on the stains themselves.

Brody had the worst red stains I have ever seen when he came to us. His eyes, mouth , under chin , wrinkles, top of his head and front feet were rust covered. I tried several things, Tums , the bleach/cornflour paste, shampoo, angel eyes . Nothing worked until I switched his food to a raw diet. Now he's all clear , lovely and white where it was all rusty before. Just sharing my experience. Good luck with whatever you try.Enclosing a before and after shot.

Wow, I can't believe the difference! What amazing results you had! Tucker's tear stains were not quite as bad, and it was only his eyes, but I did switch his drinking water to filtered water and am in the process of switching him over to grain free (Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish). The stains seemed to have gotten better just by switching him to filtered water, we will see if the food helps any.

Thanks Katie, I'd have to say it took about 8 weeks, but the first couple of weeks was messing with Angel Eyes, Tums and applying a paste of bleach and cornflour ( not for the faint of heart ). We were already using stainless steel dishes and filtered water . It was pretty clear those things were not working at all. I cannot state enough just how wonderful the raw diet is and how much it has helped all of my dogs with various problems from stains to itchy skin, weepy eyes, sore wrinkles and ear infections.

but you want to rule out any medical issues first. Then try different foods. The raw worked great for the above poster but I have seen raw feed bulldogs with horrible tears stains and red faces. So the raw may or may not work. It will really depend on the dog. So much trial and error. There are kibbles that you can feed that won;t cause the problem with your dog if it's food related...you just have to find the right food.
My sister had tear staining with NB and has switched to Acana and Cleo is much better. I will see her this week.
It will take several weeks because the stain won't actually go away but the out hair will die fall out and the new hairs coming in will be white.

We switched her to raw a year ago, and eliminated everything that isnt meat from her diet. We use filtered water. We even eliminated the probiotics. The stains definitely improved, but are not gone completely. There is nothing more we CAN eliminate.
Her nose rope squishes her eye and her eye waters. She gets much redder after she plays with her ball because she smashes her face against furniture and walls for hours while she has it. This makes her eyes water more.
Oh and I forgot she gets bananas as treats sometimes and they seem to make her redder.(ANY kind of starchy-carbohydrate seems to make her have a reaction) I know her eye watering IS the issue, but the vet has checked it every single time we visit and can not see any problem. It never seems to bother her and she doesn't scratch it anymore, so I don't worry about it much anymore. I don't like it, but I am not pursuing it either.

Other then Cleo (who is with my sister) I don't usually have a big problem with tear stains. Ester and Kohl have slight stains. I use Tylan on those that I'm showing if I need to.

will cause a little staining. Ester produces plenty of tears and her eyes are watery so she always has a little stain. I'm seeing the same with Kohl. You just want to make sure there are no lashes o0r medical issues causing the watery eyes. MacKenzie on the other hand has no watery eye issues and rarely has tear stains.
I could see where her nose rope could cause some irritation like you are getting with her eyes. Cleo also has a large nose rope and is always carrying around her teaser ball so her eye is always squished. Silly doggies :)
Boric Acid can be found in the pharmacy section of the local
drug store or grocery store, green lemon juice...I have never heard of it.
Thanks
oh geez I googled green lemon and I got stuff about LIMES ? I feel so dumb.

I have found
That tear stains are mostly food related. But, they can also be caused by a blocked tear duct. I've never heard of using boric acid.

Make sure you have stainless steel water and food dishes too.

Who would have known raw turkey did this to my beautiful boy? Augh such a pain. So you yourself haven't tried any boric acid paste ?
Acana is a really good line, not surprised Cleo is doing better.
And agreed! So many dogs are different and not everything is going to work the same for one vs the other.
