hi, im new here. owner of two bulldogs, would love to learn the best health and cares they need. my first question is orijen have 38% of protein, do you think that too much for bulldog? both of them currently eating orijen adult. but one of them gets very bad tear stains(i think its the chicken, he got tear stains too while i was giving him the royal canin24 for bulldog, so i think ima switch it to the 6fish after this bag. or do your guys have any suggestions on other grain free brand dog food would be great for bullies? and second question will be nose rope grooming. on the winkle/rope that on the top of my male bulldog, when i flip it up, inside of it, is very dirty, like dark red...can someone please give me a good way to clean it up? thank you for your time
For me, personally, I believe that is too much protein.
I feed Taste of the Wild grain free and it is about 25% protein. My girls are not that active and I don't like having that much protein in their diet if they aren't using it up. I feed the grain free salmon or lamb variety.
Can't help you with the nose rope question but others here will be able to. Good luck:-)

Hi, I have been feeding our
Hi, I have been feeding our dog 6fish since he was about 3 months old. Tried a couple flavors of TOTW first. His poops are nice and firm, 3 a day. Farts are nothing compared to the stink bombs he would unleash on his other food. Tear stains arent an issue either unless we neglect cleaning his eyes. I think the concensus about high proteins long term effects is that there is no problem unless the dog has an existing kidney/liver problem. I think the fish only formulas are what we will keep him on. I know Acana makes a version of 6 fish but with less protein.
I think that is high as well
Something around 24-26 is best IMO.
I fed "Now' a grain free food made by PetCurean, A Canadian company, with good success. I believe the protein was around 25%. I feed raw now.
Wondering about the high protein.....
....in the raw diet??? Is it because it's unprocessed that it's ok?
You know Micki
I wonder about that as well and I'm honestly not sure I'm sold on the raw feeding. I was having great results with the prepackaged raw.
Maybe one of the more educated raw feeders will comment on this.
raw
Hi,
Wondering if we could chat about your experience with raw??
Thank you and God Bless!!

red stains
I use betadine or nolvasan wound cleaner on a paper towel and really get the folds scrubbed good. You have to do this several times a day until the red is gone. Put a dab of neosporin in there after cleaning helps to kill the bacteria off. Then maybe just a couple times a week with a baby wipe will keep it clean. If you don't kill the bacteria you may never get rid of the red and irritation it causes.

We switched Fatboy off of Orijen because we could tell it was
just not right for him. I now have the idea it was due to the high protein content. My husband wanted to keep him on the chicken but I thought the fish would be better as far as weight management. We now have him on Buffalo Blue Wilderness Salmon. Also the tear stains is something we're dealing with as well even after switching; so I don't know if it can be targeted to Orijen. As for the nose fold cleaning I've been putting panalog in the fold and it seems to be looking better. That red yeast + bacteria is no good in tear stains or folds. Here is how I clean the fold:
Wet 1/2 a wash cloth (pref. microfiber because it's softer) and add some of his bath soap to it. Clean the areas under the eyes and in the fold. I then wet the other half of the wash cloth and 'rinse' the areas I washed. Take another wash cloth and dry the area by patting; rubbing it dry seems to irritate the area for Fatboy. On days I use panalog I use my finger to apply. On days I don't I use corn starch in the folds and underneath the eyes (it's kind of tricky because he moves a lot).
Fatboy aka Stinky :)
I have been using it for two years now..works great
I get the 6 fish and this food is constantly ranked the number one dog food. The protein is high but it has helped my Lola recover and rebuild from two knee surgeries.. Lola is very lean and mucular for most bullies as well... you cant question the quality of the food.. or the price you pay for it so the real question is there anything out there that really says high protein diets are bad for dogs? I am a personal trainer and alot of people say the same thing about human diets that are high in protein.. every body and bully is diffrent and our bodies based on age/herity/metabolism processes food diifrently.. You can eat 40 grams of protein thats high in quality like fish or 40 grams in two Big Macs.. its the quality that counts.. protein helps maintain mucsle mass which helps prevent bone/joint issues and I find it keeps my bully fuller for longer.. you have to feed according to your dogs lifestyle and realize there isnt a one stop shop for food.. its trial and error..
I feed Sisy Orijen Puppy Now...
...with great success. Previously I was feeding Royal Canin Puppy 32 (32% protein) with no issues until she hit the 7 month mark: she started to loose muscle mass and her coat was brittle with a lot of shedding. At that time she was eating 380 grams a of kibble a day @ 32% protein = 129 grams of protein a day.
Now, at 10 moths, with Orijen Puppy she will not eat more than 300 grams of kibble a day @ 40% protein = 120 grams of protein a day. She now sports massive and well defined muscles and a soft, shiny coat. No digestive/allergy problems whatsoever.
I know puppies' nutritional requirements change constantly but it seems Orijen contains much higher quality protein/ingredients than other foods which can be better absorbed.
I get the Orijen at a Boutique pet shop in Katy, Texas where they have a "Happy tail hour" every month. On those days everything in the store is 20% off. I pay $55 including tax for a 29.4 lbs bag of Orijen Puppy. I was paying $52 for a 30 lbs of Royal Canin Puppy 32.
