Hot spots, allergies

Hello,

My bulldog just turned 9 months old. He just finished his second round of antibiotics

and is on prednisone as well. He is on a medicated shampoo and a prescription food.

Ww can't seem to get this skin condition under control. If we leave the house when we come home

he is a bloody mess and has dug himself raw. He gets spring water and nothing but his food.

we had him on 2 Benadryl a day prior to the prednisone course. Amy suggestions???

It's possible that he is having a reaction to

the food. I would try a quality grain free food. Other causes may be laundry soap, cleaners, air fresheners, etc. Finding the culprit is a lot of trial and error. How often do you shampoo him and why? Does he have some kind of infection? Shampoo can be very harsh on the skin and can cause irritations.

Good luck

What food is he on?

there are many causes of skin problems, food is usually number one and then all the things Lynn mentioned.

I agree with Lynn and Kathy. Food is #1 suspect.

get him on a high quality grain free feed immediately. Vets are great, but they seldom look at food as the cause of allergies. I feed Blue Buffalo grain free salmon and potato. There are many good grainfree choices out there though. Taste of the Wild, Natural Balance, etc, all carry very good grain free products. Watch the protein level though, you don't want higher than 25%. Feed an adult variety, not a puppy formula, and stick to it for at least 6-8 weeks to really see any difference in your dog.

Check on the home page for a vet in your area that may be bulldog knowledgeable. A good vet is awesome, but not if they aren't familiar with is breed enough to know what these guys generally have issues with and can figure it out quickly for you.

Another suggestion

Until you get this allergy situation under control, try putting on a t-shirt with cap sleaves to prevent him from breaking skin and causing additonal staph infections. My advice is to go straight to a specialist(Dermatologist), They are a bit more expensive, but they get to the root of the problem much faster. I am a fan of both the raw diet and home cooked. Like the others said, it could very well be a food allergy. Good luck and many hugs to you and your baby.
