Hip problem

Have an Old English Bulldog - 1.5 years old - male. Thursday he tried to stand up and started to scream -- turned out the bowl(s) in his hip is very flat -- so where the ball of the big bone in the hind leg joins the hip is too flat. I am told for him to have surgery -- they take part of the ball off on the big leg bone. Just wondering -- I am told that the prognosis is good and that he will be as good as new after the surgery. Any alternatives treatment options or comments on this surgery would be much appreciated. I am told that the operation often is a permanent fix and that he will run and walk normally.

Any comments are much appreciated -- good or bad -- we don't want him to suffer --- but we also want him to give it a go -- as long as he can have a quality life. He is a fantastic dog -- never seen him being aggressive - he is like Ferdinan the bull and we want him to be around for many years.

We've never had hip problems...

just tplo's, but my advice would be to make sure your surgeon has done a lot of hip surgeries.  We had the choice of having our regular vet do tplo or having an orthopedic surgeon do it.  The ortho was $1000 more but he had a successful surgery and is totally fine now.  I don't know about OEB's but I do know that english bulldogs as a rule don't have very good hips.  We always give our guys glucosomine and lots of walks to build up muscle.  If the hip is giving him pain though, that's another story.  Good luck to your boy.

Hip Dysplasia

I am almost positive that this guy has hip dysplasia. Get him to the vet ASAP.

Thanks,
