Glucosamine

Anyone giving their bullys Glucosamine as they get older? Was thinking of putting mine on some, getting slower and can see he has some arthritis starting when he wakes up...however the receptionist at my vets office said don't waste my money, they don't work. She said unless they have lots msm or something? She recommended Fish Oil/Omega 3 instead.....(probably because they sell at the vet clinic and wants me to buy from them instead, lol)

I'm going to the vet today (taking our other dog in) and will ask the vet today, but just curious if others use Glucosamine and if they worked with your bulldog.

Thanks

Mine is on both

In my opinion everydog should be on Fish oil from day one. The glucosamine made a HUGE difference for my dog who had a slight CCL tear.  Lubes his joints right up and he is much more stiff or sore without it.

Mine are all on both Glucosamine and Fish Oil.

I start Glucosamine at young ages and they do quite well as they get older with their joints. I give 1000 mg of Glucosamine Sulfate 1 time a day in their food. I buy the capsules that can be pulled apart, that way if I have to pour them over food for a dog that won't eat the whole pill, I can do that. But mine all eat the pill right in their food without my having to break it open!

I also give 1000mg of Norwegian Salmon Oil from Wal Mart. One pill a day, and their coats are like glass. And very little shedding at all.

Do you use the spring valley brand

Hi Amy I noticed you said you can start them both at young ages.  Cooper is 62 lbs and a year and 1/2 old.  Clayton will be five months old this month and is 33 lbs.  They both are on pet tabs,, but I wanted to try fish oil and now am considering the Glucosamine Sulfate as well.  Do you get them both at Walmarts ?  I saw Spring Valley  fish oil and glucosamine Sulfate.  Would you give them each 1????  Thanks for your helpSorry about the photo not sure how to flip around!!!!!

I love those mugs!

Yes, I use the Spring Valley. 1000mg for the Glucosamine, and what ever the Norwegian Salmon comes in! I can just give Sophia and Kora the fish oil pill and they will eat it right down. Millie needs it mixed into her dinner and I use Yogurt for that:-)

Sophia has been on Glucosamine since she was 16 weeks old. She has very good joints at 4.5 years old.

We put Rocky on Glucosamine sulfate sodium free by

Source Naturals  500mg a day. The bottle has 120 capsules for $14.39 at health food store.  Our vet actually said to use it after Rocky hurt his knee it worked like magic.  Omega 3 fish oil is more for their coat it does have anit inflamitory abilities also.  I use it myself.

ok, so Glucosamine.... any

ok, so Glucosamine.... any certain types/brands to buy or?  They sell the dog brands at petsmart but seems cheaper to buy at a regular pharmacy.... I'm sure my vet will say buy from their office but the pharmacy stuff people use is just the same right?

For a 49lb dog how much dosage a day?

Kofi gets human grade

when I give it to her. We buy it a Sams.

I buy glucosamine/chondriotin with MSM.

In my Raw Dog Food book she says to figure roughly 100-300 mg per 10 lbs of dog.

She also says the the most common (and cheapest) form of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is not well assimilated by dogs and can irritate their stomachs. She suggests a formula with either calcium ascorbate or sodium ascorbate.

I give the Spring Valley brand of Glucosamine Sulfate from...

WalMart. I give one, 1000mg dose daily by putting in their breakfast and mixing in a tablespoon of plain, fat free yogurt. They eat the whole capsule, but you can also pull it apart and pour the powder into the food and have them eat it that way. My girls could care less, as long as it is mixed with their food it can be the whole pill. Sophie weighs about 47 pounds. 1000mg is fine for her size.

ok so I bought a bottle of

ok so I bought a bottle of "Swiss Natural Sources" Glucosamine, Chondroitin & MSM....1000mg

each tablet contains 500mg Glucosamine, 200mg Chondroitin, 300mg MSM.

I'm sure that is ok for a 49 lb bully?  1 tablet a day?

We took our other dog to vet today, and I mentioned the Glucosamine with him, he's not very big on it, doesn't think it works... he said go ahead and try, but didn't really give me a straight answer on the dosage, so I did some research and seems most people give 500mg-1000mg of Glucosamine a day...... (or 100-300mg per 10 lbs of dog).

I will try it out, there's no bad side effects is there (if it doesnt work?) I mean, can't harm him at all can it?

AmyandSophia's picture

That should be plenty.

I would not look for real visible improvements unless there is already arthritis. Then there may be a slight change. Otherwise, this is a good preventative AGAINST joint issues in the future. The time you will be able to see the difference is when the dog is older and would be exhibiting symptoms of arthritis or joint pain, and they don't:-) That is what I have found anyway.

thanks Amy, and yes he is

thanks Amy, and yes he is showing signs, he is 11.5 years old... when he wakes up he's kinda stiff, lol, moves slower nowadays then before, but overall he is great shape still, I just think he could use something to ease any little pains he may have.....

so even if these don't work or have any affect, not harmful at all is it?

AmyandSophia's picture

Aw, I didn't catch the age before.

What a trooper:-) This should help him some. I would ask your vet about a gentle pain reliever that may help as well, not a daily thing necessarily, but something for those "old, achy joint" kind of days, ya know:-)
