Diarrhea

My Alfred has had diarrhea for a week now, I have tried the white rice, no treats, changing his food, nothing is working? I think he may have an ear infection, and I'm taking him to the vet. However, he has ear infections before and they never caused diarrhea. Any idea what could be causing it?

Is he on medication for the ear infection?

Sometimes medicines can cause diahrrea.  Or he could have picked up a parasite.  Ask your vet to do a fecal exam and give him some flagyl (metronadozole) to clear it up.  Also, canned pumpkin (not pie mix, just plain pumpkin) is good for diarrhea, a heaping spoonful on every meal.

No he is not on medicine for

No he is not on medicine for the ear infection yet, we are taking him tonight. I tried the pumpkin, and I also tried the white rice, but they didn't work, it changed the colour of the diahrrea but he still has it.

You might need to put him on a special diet for gastro upsets...

Our Chester has been in Hill's ID canned food for almost a year now.  Every time we take him off, he gets diarrhea, so as much as I don't think it's a great food, he's staying on it.  Let me know what the outcome is for your guy.

Well we have been to the vet,

Well we have been to the vet, and Alfred appears to have a upper instestine infection. We have been feeding Alfred Raw since he was a baby. The Vet said he doesn't really recommend it. It is raw,  which can easly get contanminated. I was told by the trainer that it is better as dogs are animals and animals were always ment to eat raw. The Vet does not agree with that, as that was the case billions and billions  of years ago when dogs were living in the wild. Home dogs/pets have been out of the wild for billions of years so raw is not really as good as the trainer is saying.  So we have medicine to clear up the infection and we have switch him over to a dog food that is for alergy and skin care, as bull dogs do have a lot of alergies and are very senstive to things. He has already had a firm bowel movement this morning and I'm happy to say I am releaved.

Raw is kind of controversial.

Raw is kind of controversial.  Some vets are totally against and some support it.  I have been feeding raw for years with no problem.  There are some great dry kibble foods out there.  I would just try to keep the protein level on the lower side.

Glad he's feeling better...

my vet loves raw food.  We give Jesse Natures Variety basic instinct frozen raw, easy to use and we just thaw it before each meal.  She is doing so much better on it than kibble, no more gunky yeast in her ears and tail.
