Here is some background prior to posting my question...my male bulldog is about 10 years old. My family basically saved him from another family that sold him to us with a bad skin condition that we finally got treated and fixed after many, many vet visits. He is a large pure bread bulldog (70 lbs), not fat by any means. About 4 years after owning him he had to have emergency urinary tract (not urinating hardly at all) surgery to reroute his urethra due to a very high amount of bladder stones blocking his urethra. The vet said that he is just prone to fast build up so it was going to happen eventually.
Ok, now he now has to be in a crate during the day so we know where he has been and not to allow him to urinate throughout the house. He didn't do this up until about 6 mos ago (his current urine stream is strong) but he actually will pee in the crate and now just lay in it, daily! We bathe him constantly. He doesn't do this while we are home. He holds it for up to 4 hours until indicating he needs to go. But, if we were to let him out and then get him two hours later there is a good possibility that he has peed in there. It is a large kennel (I know they should only have enough room to lay) but he never did this before and dogs generally don't like to urinate where they lay but he doesn't mind. He is getting a lot slower, more blind, and more deaf for sure. I am just afraid of doing anything drastic.
It may be that you need to try a med called Proin.
I had an old Doberman girl that would do what your boy does, and she was getting to be an issue in our home. I spoke to my vet and we agreed to try Proin, not sure how it works but it did work wonders for her. No more accidents, and she was happier as were we!
Do you know what caused the stones? Maybe a diet change is in order? Are you grain free? Just a thought:-)
