Our Bubba was just diagnosed with terminal cancer yesterday. I was offered the option of him having the tumor and lung removed which may have given him another 3 months of life or palliative treatment which would give him a month or less to live. I chose not to have the surgery done. It would have made for a very miserable life for at least a month with no way of knowing if he would live 2 more months after that operation. I just couldn't do that to my beautiful boy.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to feed him. His appetite is very poor. He's already lost 7 pounds.

I would give
him anything he wants.... If it's not hurting him, give him everything.... I'm with you, I would not have the surgery done either.... How old is he???
....and one more thing
I am sorry to hear about your sweet Boy - Prayers are with you - they are a part of our family !!!
I would give
Bubba was just 9 years old. I just spoke with his vet who is an absolutely wonderful man! His suggestion was the same as yours...give him anything he wants! He suggested lots of protein and less carbs due to cancer caused weight loss. He said protein may help with lessening the weight loss. He also ordered a doggie version of Motrin for a couple of reasons. One for pain but also because this one medication has been proven to shrink the size of tumors in some dogs. He said it doesn't work that way 100% of the time and it most definitely will not get rid of the cancer but may prolong his life without suffering. Going to give it a try. Looked it up and the research basically says the same thing he did.
Thank you for your response!

I'm so sorry
We lost a Rottie to cancer a few years ago. I've been in your shoes and I'm just so sad for you. But...later on when you muddle through this, it will always be a comfort to know you gave him love and kept him as comfortable as possible. You will know when he's ready...it's wrapping your heart and head around it that's so hard.
we found baby food was a great way to get protein in ...the jars of meat. I'm with whatever he will eat. But...you might try the baby food. I wish you peace through this and much love to Bubba.
So sorry
I would also give Bubba these capsules called "coriolus psp". You can order them on Amazon. They consist of medicinal mushrooms known to slow down spread of cancer cells. I say feed your boy home made goodness every day. Boilded organic beef or chicken with some nice steamed organic veggies. Throw in a sardine or two and you will have one happy doggie! Blessings to Bubba. May his final months be happy and pain free. xoxo
So sorry to hear this...
I always get that sinking feeling in my stomach when I hear cancer. Oscar had lymphoma and was on chemo for months. His appetite would come and go, but at the end it was hard to get him to eat. We finally tried baby food meat sticks and chicken sticks (in the baby food section of the grocery) and he would eat those. There is also a paste that I used to buy at Petsmart that was to stimulate appetite, I believe it was nutro vite or something along those lines. I will see if I can google it. They do recommend not to have a high carb diet because sugar seems to stimulate and feed the cancer cells, at least that is one of the more recent theories. The problem with a cancer dog is that what they eat on a day that they are feeling bad becomes something they never want to see again, so you do have to do some switching around. Hope he starts eating for you and hope his days are easy ones.
Cancer
Thank you to each and everyone of you for your suggestlons. I had a roast chicken tonight. After it cooled, I shredded the meat. He ate like a little pig! He also took his Metacam with his favorite cheddar cheese. Do you think an occasional dog treat (cookie) would be okay? I know they have carbs but he so loves his dog cookies. I will be trying all of your suggestions.

Most diets are about the long term. In this case, give your pup his favorite foods – chicken, cheese, etc – as long as it's not something that dogs can't eat like chocolate or grapes. Don't worry about a balanced diet. It's more important that he enjoy his food and that he keeps up the calories. I am so sorry. This must be hardest on you. Just give him love.
Yes, I would absolutely give him his favorite treats...
whatever makes him happy.
Oh my, I am so sorry to hear about your boy.
My heart goes out to you. Give that boy anything you can to keep him eating. And hugs, lots of soft hugs.

Make him as comfortable
as possible and enjoy all that his life has to give. Quality of life is important, IMHO.
MacKenzie has CHF and all I can do is make his days the best he has had in his life.
Food
Merrick makes great canned foods and if I remember a tripe canned. I feed Norbert this when he was sick from his cancer.

DOGS WITH CANCER ************miracle supplement*********
I have been giving my dog that was diagnosed with spleen cancer (95% of them are gone within 2 months) K9 Dog Immunity and a grain free diet. This will help 'prevent' or prolong the spreading of it. It is so fascinating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also sweet potatos/pumpkin on the food have been working well. My English Bulldog just turned 13 and his diagnosis was a year and a half ago. he did have his spleen removed. Get it!!!!!!!
Amazon sells it less expensive than the manufacturer: www.alohamedicinals.com
I have been giving my English bulldog 1 a day before his cancer diagnosis and now 6 a day. They told me to give 3 a day but I upped it since he will just urinate it out if he doesn't need. (I have no affiliation with this company other than using it for my two dogs).
