Boy Confused

I wonder if anyone with experience can provide comment.

Our bully Aibou is now nine and has some health problems, and we give him pills for leg pain and also eye drops and medication for his eyes as he is nearly blind.

About six months ago he became distressed and went into a sort of fugue state, panting and pacing up and down, getting stuck behind furniture in a room he had lived in all his life etc. We weren't sure from googling whether this was canine cognitive dysfunction or his increasing blindness. Anyway, it didn't last more than a day or so and he has been back to normal this past six months.

However a day or so back the same symptoms returned. As well as distressed panting and pacing, getting stuck behind furniture, he also seems to be sometimes looking at things that aren't there and on some of his walks he has walked twenty minutes without sniffing or peeing once (quite out of character). When he is in one of these states he also does not really seem to recognise me properly or respond (we are very close).

The funny thing is these states are temporary (say half an hour to an hour), but there have been five or six in the past five days or so. The rest of the time he is normal.

He has always had a tendency to get overexcited at times, but this is sort of ten times that with a large dose of confusion which he would never get just from being overexcited.

I have googled the issue and we are trying lavender oil (a drop on the nape of his neck). Also giving him more attention. If things continue we will obviously need to contact the vet (and I am aware of anipryl; also omega 3's).

In the interim, I would be very appreciative if anyone has experienced this or has any comments.

Thank you, Chris

It sounds like they are escalating...

Has he been on the pain pills for a while?  They can cause confusion.  I would take him for a vet visit.  Try to video this behavior so you can show the vet what you are talking about.

Thanks for your comment.

Thanks for your comment. Funnily enough our boy went back to being normal (insofar as he ever is normal!) shortly after I posted ... so we just continue to watch him. As this has now happened twice, about six months apart, I guess there is a risk of reoccurrence but for the moment things are all good.

OMG this is my Bueller EXACTLY

My Bueller is 13, has had these episodes for the last two years.... Have you gotten any help? When our Bueller has an Episode we give him a xANAX and make him safe in a room until it kicks in. Seems to help him a lot....

Thanks for this post, I have been suffering a long time with this issue and there is not a lot out there...
