bloodwork

Stoney"s vet is recommending blood work.  He told me to make the appoitnment in the a.m. and they would call for me to pick him up when it's over.  I called and found out that they might put him in twilight sleep. They want him to be calm, he's usually calm.   Now I'm worried.  Is this standard procedure?  He's never had any issues, he has great breathing and hardly ever snores.

Thanks for any advice,

Peggy and Stoney

Is this a normal checking of a CBC panel?

My dogs have never been sedated for blood draws.  They all get complete panels 1 x a year and more if necessary.  1 gets her urine drawn every 4 months and they use an ultrasound with needle draw for that,  no sedation.  I am always hesitant of sedation unless it is necessary for the test.

I forgot to add...they all go in the A.M. because they fast

before the blood draw.

Bloodwork for what?

Never heard of a vet keeping a dog just to draw blood. It only takes a minute.

There is absolutely no need for sedation for a blood draw...

Chester just had one done last week and they just take it from his leg, he never even flinched.  And whatever you do, do NOT let them use Acepromozine (ACE) to sedate him,  many of our short nosed guys have died from that sedative.

Talked to Stoney's Breeder

He pretty much advised against it.  I do not want to take any chances!  I will not be getting the bloodwork done.  Thank you all so much for the advice.

So this is a new Vet for us, we just moved here.  I took Stoney for his regular checkup and asked for heartworm medicine, at that time he said he needed bloodwork.  He said to make an appointment in the morning, he never mentioned putting him to sleep.    It was when I called to make the appointment the receptionest mentioned anesthesia and they would call me when he was ready.  When I started asking questions she was sort of vague.

So I guess I'll make a trip North to his regular Vet for the blood work.

Love this guy sooo much!  He is worth it!

I have absolutely NEVER...

Heard of any vet putting a dog under sedation for a blood draw!! How insane! My vet did a farm call for me for my two ranch dogs that don't travel well...she drew blood on each of them IN MY DRIVEWAY! It didn't even phase those two dogs! Tomorrow morning I am taking Sophia in for a check up for a diahrea issue we are having with her, no sedation mentioned for her bloodwork! Seriously, that vet you are seeing is cracked!
