Hi, I absolutely love this website and it has helped us so much in the beginning when we first got our incredible bully, halfback. He is 11mo and we got him from my husband's boss, who got him from a kennel, he was 4mo then. I was/am inexperienced in dogs, clueless really. But one thing I knew I loved the dog from the very first time I layed eyes on him. And since that moment I have done all I can to educate myself on this very special breed. So, now to the serious stuff, i am sad to say halfback has been in one way or Another 'sick' since that very first week we had him. We have been to the vet's office at least once a month for all different things, mostly skin issues but he just had surgery TWICE within five days on his lil privates. He had a prolapsed urethra in which the first surgery wasn't enough and within 4 days it reprolapsed and he had to go through that all over again! But that was a few weeks ago and he's all better in that department....but now he is shedding exccesively, has huge bald spots, a funky order in his fur/skin. The get put him on antibiotics, ruled out mites, she said lets see what the antibiotics do in vet put him on antibiotics and a medicated shampoo, she ruled out mites, and told us to come back in two weeks, if the a/b helped then 'she's on the right track' if not then she can rule out bacterial infection and perhaps move on to an anitfungal. He has been on the meds for three days, and we've washed him once with the shampoo. I don't know if this is one of those 'has to get worse before it gets better' things but halfback's shedding and bald spots have gotten quite bad, I would say it has doubled in its severity. We are so worried for this beautiful companion we have. What are we doing wrong? What are we missing? Halfback is such a happy guy, he seems so oblivious to his health issues (which he probably has no idea! Bulldogs and their amazing high threshold for pain!) what could be causing all these problems? We just need some advice from fellow bulldog lovers! Please help? We truly appreciate any feedback, thanks!! And happy new year to all!
a couple ideas and suggestions!
Firstly, please be sure to be feeding Halfback a good quality, grain free food. That'll work miracles for allergies. I give Winston Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream, but there are others like Canidae, Nature's Variety, Honest Kitchen, Addiction...all are good choices. That'll take a couple months to get things "flushed" from his system, but it will be good for him in the long run.
Secondly, if you don't already give him filtered water please consider getting a Brita (or something similar) to filter his drinking water. It's amazing what good, clean water can do to help our bullies out.
Now the "smell" issue concerns me. I'd definitely follow the course of "treatments" that your vet has you on. You definitely don't want to stop the antibiotics and cause a more severe problem to errupt. Can you describe the smell at all? Does it smell like fritos--if so that's a yeast problem and something that the antibiotics could correct for you. Does he smell "fishy" at all--if so it might be related to either his tail pocket having an issue or his anal glands might need to be drained.
Seasonal hair loss is pretty common in bullies...it's related to not getting enough sunlight/vitamin D in the shorter Winter days. It's worth talking about this option with your vet. It might be that she prescribes him to take a vitamin D supplement or melatonin to help minimize the seasonal hair loss. If you look up Seasonal Flank Alopecia on this website you'll find a lot of good information about it. If his skin (where he's lost the hair) is smooth and healthy looking I'd tend to think that would be what is going on...if it is scaby or scaly at all you might have another cause for the hair loss.
Sorry that your poor guy has had issues with a prolapsed urethra. Winston went through that as well. It's almost 2 years since his surgery (March will be 2 years) and besides the first few weeks of healing he has not had any further complications from it. So stay positive. That will heal! :)
Please let me know about the smell and any other issues. I'm sure others here on BDW will have some ideas to help out your sweet guy. Also...don't be shy about posting his picture!! :)

My swimming bully buddy!
Does he have any discoloration around his toenails?
that is one thing they look for when I bring Onslow in, he has many skin issues also. Yeast tends to go in the toenail area.
The smell makes me think it could be a staph infection. Does his fur look moth eaten? What antibiotics is he on?
toenails??
Really...the yeast goes in the toenails? Wow...I had no idea why Winston had weird marks in his nails, but he has been battling yeasty toes since I've had him.
Should I be worried about the discolored spots in his nails, are they a "weak" point or just like what humans get when they bruise the nail bed and get the white calcium deposits?

One of the vets we see is smart about allergies
and its one of the first thing he showed me. I never noticed it, really. I would maybe ask your vet to look at it next time you go. Male dogs are more prone to toe fungus then females. Seems right. LOL
haha
True...Toe Fungus does seem to be more of a dude thing. :)
I'll ask him next we go in.

some Bullies react to anestesia by sheding
it can take a few weeks for it to get better.
It sounds like his immune system is weak, or weakened. Some yogurt in his food and/or acidolophis pills will help boost it, give him some Vit. C too.
Anestesia
Dang, I know that is not spelled right, but oh well, hurts my brain.
Two surgeries in a short time can be an issue with hair loss, BUT would not create a smell, could be you are dealing with a couple different issues.
Some dogs (and humans) have hair loss after surgeries that never comes back. I used to have a huge thick head of hear, but two kids via C-section took care of that real quick, never did come back like it used to be!

Did the vet do a skin scrap?
and culture to determine what antibiotic to give? What antibiotic is the dog on? Is the vet just guessing? The smell most likely is from a staph infection.
What food are you feeding? Have you recently changed?
Someone mentioned Alopecia. It is not that. Seasonal Alopecia doesn't leave bald spots all over the dog.
First of all
It's very, very, very important that your Vet is experienced with bulldogs. I can't stress how important that is. Some Vets see a bulldog come in and automatically see $$$$$.
Second, make sure your dog gets a skin scrape. A skin scrape should determine what you are dealing with.
Third, feed your dog a good quality food. I recommend feeding a grain free food. But, each dog reacts differently to dog food and it's really trail and error. You can also try different proteins. One of my dogs is allergic to chicken so I usually feed a salmon based food.
Good Luck!
Thanks for all the replies...
Okay, so the smell is more like 'fritos' and it seems to have almost be gone. The antibiotics he is on is cephalexin 500mg 3/day. He did get a skin scraping to determine mites, which came back neg. I am on the hunt for a good diet for him, he seems very picky, of course high maintenance bullies, gotta love em! When he first came into our lives he was on science diet which i read the ingredients and decided it couldn't be good. Besides, he'd go up to three days without touching his food!! And of course the vet says 'its the best diet you can feed your dog, he'll eat when he's hungry enough' I was appalled! So rather in law recommended blue buffalo which he is on now but it's somewhat the same story. I've tried different meats but without much success. I will def try one of the foods you have suggested, immediately! And i assume to gradually switch right? I will have to inspect his nails for the discoloration. The shedding has not gotten any better, worse actually. There seems to be a constant coat of fuzzy loose fur on his back. It breaks my heart to have my lovely halfback go through all this. I wish there was a vet around who is experienced or who especializes on bulldogs!! But I've called in our area and there doesn't seem to be any, they almost get offended that i would even ask. I really appreciate all of you responding and giving advice, it means a lot to have all this input. Btw, I would love to post pics but my laptop is not working, so I'm using the iPad which doesn't give me the option to upload :( thanks again and I will keep you updated.
Not sure where you're
Not sure where you're located, but BDW has a pretty extensive list of good bulldog vets here:
http://www.bulldogsworld.com/health-and-medical/veterinarians
Maybe that will help you find somebody reasonably near by?
I looked at the list, thanks
I looked at the list, thanks for the tip! We are located in n. central mass. The bulldog vets in MA arent very close but there's one about an hour long, my husband and I decided that's nothing if it means better care for The Halfster! So we are pretty anxious to give them a call! Oh and your signature pic is sooo cute! Kinda reminds me of our fattie mcgoo, same coloring :)
Vets
Just beware no vet is going to say they specialize in bulldogs. What you want to ask is do they see alot of bulldogs in their practice and are they real experienced with bulldogs. The vets on the list are those that have been referred to the list by BDW owners that use those vets and have had a good relationship with them. There are only a couple of vets that I can think of that see primarily bulldogs and that is Dr. Butchko in CA and I can't remember the name of the other one that is on the eastcoast.

Update
So good news, halfback's bald spots are all growing hair back! So relieved about that one! The shedding is still there and doesn't seem to have gotten any less. Right now we are just happy the bald spots are on their way to filling in fully.
I have a question for any who can answer it or just give their input...
Would the urethral prolapse be considered a congenital defect? My husband and I Are trying to figure if it's considered that or not, I remember the vet showing me a textbook that said it was a congenital defect most commonly seen in bulldogs. But our vet told us she can't find anything that actually states such words. She also believes it is though. Anyway just curious :) thanks guys you're all awesome :)
Not an expert,
But I do think that prolapse is generally considered to be a congenital problem, but as I said, I'm not an expert.
I'm glad that halfbacks hair is coming back in :)
