Hi, One of our bullies had to have an x-ray yesterday - to rule out possible causes of repeated regurgitation of her food. They had to sedate her to get the x-ray. Used something called (I know this is not the right name but is all I remember) tropotol (?). When we picked up Lily she was groggy and unsteady on her feet. Once home this progresses - she just sat, staring at nothing and nodding off -- she was no better by morning. It was as if she was no longer 'there' -- no response to us or her brother or to the cats. She would not eat or drink. Took her back to the vet for observation. They gave her Rimadyl, thinking she showed signs of being in pain. That seemed to help (or it was given coincidentally with her getting better anyway) and she is slowly coming back to herself. The vet was completely surprised and very concerned by what happened to Lil. Has anyone else had something similar happen?
Thanks so much!

Yes
My Puppy had Cherry eye replacement surgery and after the surgery she had the same symptoms that your dog did. They had to admit her into the vet emergency hospital for two days because she was still having trouble breathing. It was scary, she pretty much almost died. She is going to get spayed tomorrow and I had all the records sent over to my regular vet to make sure we don't have the same thing happen under anesthesia this time. I'm sorry you had problems too. :(
Hope all is well now!
makes no sense to give
a rimidyl...your vet is a ass and i would find another one in a hurry....she ascted like this after a x ray....she is a bulldog and they gave her a pain killer really...i would be moving my records.....when i bulls go in for any surgerical work...becasue their bulldgos a vet tech stays with them till their up and standing...for at least 15 min...
your dog had a reaction to the drugs,,,thats very clear...and i would be very worried about putting her under any other sedatives....
Agree Judy
There should not have been pain from an xray so I don'd understand the use of Rimadyl at all. The dog was overdosed with the anesthetic. They should be up and walking when you take them. My vet would have never sent home a dog in that condition. It should never take that long to come out of it, especially for an xray. I also question the drug used for a mild sedative.
Why did they have to sedate your dog for an x ray?
I'm sorry if that sounds like a silly question. My 7 month old has already has 6 views on file and they never had to sedate him. Just wondering thats all. He is my first bully. I'm just trying to learn....<3

sedation for x-rays
They said that they could not get her to lie still enough. The vet said she used the safest sedative she knew of and just a very small amount -- but the adverse reaction was big. I will not let her be sedated in future unless there is absolutely no alternative. This was a very scary episode and I never want her (or us) to go through this again.. Thanks everyone for your replies.

You need to find a bully vet.
They know what to use on bull dogs. They can only take certain sedatives. Post a question as to what sedatives and also what is used if they need surgery. I can't remember off hand you could also do a search on this site.
Jo Ann
My vet uses propofol
n/m
Please!!! No ACE
To add to Jo Ann's response... please make sure your vet NEVER uses the tranquilizer ACE (acepromazine). It is contraindicated in all bradycephalic dogs. Please take this advice from someone who gave Ace to her beloved bully and he died within an hour of taking the med. The "someone" is me. Our first Bubba's death happened over 6 years ago and I still don't forgive myself.

Poor baby
That is terrible. They should have called you or something you could have calmed her down I bet. People just need to slow down and not rush things sometimes geez. I hope your baby is better <3
