13 year old bullie developed throw up/excess saliva issues

My male bullie, Clem Bob has always been pretty healthy. This dog barely snores and has never had breathing issues. We have always had an elevated bowl and bought good dry food.  He used to be overweight and we switched to diet food and then food for older dogs, but over time and not recently.  The food we were using was about dime size, maybe slightly smaller, one cup a day in the morning.  This has been the same since we got him.  No problems until like the last couple months.  He just started throwing up what appeared to be his whole meal with lots of thick saliva.  Twice he was choking, and fortunately my wife (a nurse) was with him and had to basically use the Heimlich to save him.  Had she not been there, she said he would definitely not be with us.  He had fallen over and started convusling.

We have switched to a much smaller food size, and 2-3 small meals a day.  He is surviving, but seems to still be generating lots of thick saliva and seems to try to clear his throat fairly regularly (sounds like he's trying to bring up major flem).  Besides sounding completely revolting, there has to be something better.

I see suggestion for probiotics, but for an older dog? I know he's unusually old, but there must e something we can do for him.  Water in his food?  Wet food mixed in?  Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Homemade diet

Wow! Your bully sounds pretty amazing and you have shown great care. My advice is to start making him a homemade diet. I would boil (ground turkey or chicken) and steam and put through food processor a variety of green veggies (broccoli, grean beens, and some carrots). I also add some organci brown rice but that is up to you. For supplements I add in ground bone meal (for calcium) a mega probiotic, and a krill oil capsule or 1 canned sardine every day for his omega 3 requirements. My dog could not tolerate commercial dog food anymore after the age of 10. He is now 15 and still thriving. A trip to the vet may also be in order to rule out anything serious. Good Luck!

Wow! 15.  That's the oldest

Wow! 15.  That's the oldest I've heard of. That's a very speacial and time consuming diet, but sounds like its worth it.  I need a good bullie vet that's local.  Not convinced my friend who is a vet is all that concerned.  I don't think it's serious, just food related.  I think you did confirm that.  So many people don't have bullies this old.  Lost my girl at 6, very unexpectedly.  That's when I learned about raised bowls.  May or may not have contributed.
