Ok so a lot of people seem to be opposed to this new Grand Championship title. You have to look at from several different points of view. I know people are saying it is away for the AKC to generate money. Why is this a problem? AKC has lost a lot of money lately from all the new knock off and generic registries that cater to puppy mills. The loss of puppy mills using AKC is a good thing but the money they are losing is not. So for them to set up a legitimate way of earning money for the club that We ALL USE and care about seems to be fine by me. Most of these Generic registries do not have strict guidelines as the AKC does, so puppy mills are flocking to them. Examples: DNA testing and record keeping.. AND they still selling registered dogs to ignorant buyers that do not know the difference. I do not think that this will demean the Championship title of a dog, if the owners chose not to pursue a Grand Championship title. So again, why is it a problem for the AKC to generate money in this legitimate way .without it we would not have the club, dog shows and sport that most of us love.

LOL
I wasnt even going to go their. It just seems that some people have already made up there minds about this..That is fine, but stuping to insulting it is not fare...considering some people are going to attempt to get it.

I meant Champion
CHampion= 100 points
Grand champ= 200 popints
Grand champ 1= 300
and so on ....
The ADBA has the grand champion title
When you reach the title of Grand Champion in that registry, you've aquired 100 points ( that's how many it takes for a championship) and then you continue to show in the champion class until you've collected another 100 points. Then, you are a grand champion. They don't stop there either. You can aquire Grand Champion 1,2,3,4 etc.....
It's good for the clubs and the registry.
This is similar to where Obedience ring was when I was starting.
The furthest you could go with a dog is the UD or Utility Dog title. Then they created the Obedience Trial Championship which you can obtain only by placing first or 2nd in Utility B and Open B and at least one placement must be in each class level.
Then they developed the UDX which was for less than brilliant performers but whose owners still wanted to show after they got their titles of CDX and UD...so that is awarded after the dog has passed BOTH Open and Utility Class in the SAME show on the SAME day 10 times. This was more achievable for the non Border Collie/Golden Retriever etc dog who could place against equally experienced dogs and handlers.
It is used to keep dogs and handlers out there showing, competing etc and having fun doing it for as long as they like!
Of course there is Agility now which is a slightly different performance venue w/ multiple titles including not just Master Agility, akin to UD in Obedience....but they went one more and there is a MACH (Master Agility Champion) with either passing or placing 10 times in top level class in agility which I believe is still Master agility. (you can also walk the course w/o the dog before hand to familiarize yourself with course, which obstacles follow which and plan ahead your footwork or body position to help your dog navigate the course the best)
Then for folks who are not as incredibly motivated to train and show a dog to show ring obedience on and off leash level, Rally was created which gives an entirely different type if person a place to compete as you can talk to your dog during exercises and use your hands as guides though not touching your dog...however...there is the problem with being literate...and mathematical as a 270 degree left turn can be a bit confusing...of course, you learn all about the signs in classes and you get to walk the pattern of the laid out course w/o your dog ahead of time.
So....now it is conformation's turn to 'grow'.
Compete in Grand Championship or for it only if you want to...no one is twisting your arm!! LOL

Re: Grand Championship title.
I don't have any problem with a Grand Champion title (even if it does generate more money for AKC which is not necessarily a bad thing). My view is that it gives those exhibitors that are out there anyway campaigning their dogs another level to achieve. The CH exhibits are being shown anyway - why not compete on a higher level for a grand championship? I just don't see a problem here. There are no additional fees from what I can tell if you're entering anyway and yes, this does encourage more entries in breed but what's wrong with that?
I say bring it on .. If I were campaining a CH dog or bitch it would be more interesting to have something else to go for. No matter the size of the best of breed entry there is currently only 1 "winner" - best of breed and 1 recognition - best opposite. It seems that this adds 2 new recognitions (select dog and select bitch) that not only earn recognition but points towards grand champion.
Am I missing something? If AKC is seeking to maintain it's status as a viable organization that's a good thing; I'd hate to see my entry fees go up. Instead, let the breeders who seek this recognition enter their CH dogs/bitches to increase revenues.

AKC
and just think how much money they would save if they didn't mail each and every thing seperately.
Being our club secretary I get lots of mail from AKC. If our club shows consist of 2 sweeps, 2 regular classes and a puppy match I get 5 letters from them okaying it. Then after the show weekend is over I get another bunch of letters saying our show weekend is closed out.
Re: Grand Championship title.
agree that AKC needs money and that is not my problem with it.
Just think about how much money they would have if they moved from totally from Manhatten to NC..
