Do you give antibiotics to a bitch being bred?

I know some do & some don't.

Olivia is in season. She's had some misses. No pups yet. She's 4 1/2 so time is running out.

She goes for a progesterone test today and will have a surgical implant when the time is right.

I started her on folic acid. What about an antibiotic?

Sue

good luck

he's beautiful!!! My girl missed twice so gave her 10 days of baytril and she took, It was started on her first day of her cycle and stopped when she was bred. I gave live culture yogurt while on it. Her next two litters she wasn't given it but took, my vet and breeders friends feel they can pick up micro organisms when out and about at shows ect. good luck!!

We don't arbitrarily give them. If there is a history of problems we would after a work up determined the appropriate medicine.
If you give them, suppliment with acidophillis.

Re: Do you give antibiotics to a bitch being bred?

My Marley had missed 2 times. This last time the repo vet in Houston had me start her at the bebinning of her first show of discharge on Baytril for 10 days I think. Then we switched over to cephalexin for the remainder of her cycle and pregnancy (btw it's very cheap if you get it from Walmart, Kmart, etc). We also did a surgical implant which we had not done before. We had done a tradtional AI and a TCI before. I went with the "big guns" this time because like you her clock was ticking - nothing conservative. We had six pups from Boo - my Brix and Mabel's sire. They are now 4 weeks old and I'm happy to say Marley has been a wonderful mother. One other thing - they switched her over to amoxicillin when the pups were born but when the pups were 10 days old, Marley got Mastitis. Showed up so quickly, but I took her right in and requested a injection and they again put her on oral cephalexin. I worked on that teat and ended up not having to pull the pups. Everyone went back to nursing on it after a few days.

yes

One week proir to breeding I give my bitches cephalexin 500mg twice a day. This is just in case of an unseen infection or parisite. I give folic acid starting one week ahead and continue throughout the pregnacy (2 per day).

Thanks for responding...

Olivia went to the repro vet today for her first progesterone test. We discussed the antibiotic.

She said that since Olivia has missed and she's 4 1/2 years old that she wanted her on Baytril until the implant takes place.

Olivia will be bred to Ch Rascal Cali's Windkist Bandit. He's a Chief grandson on both sides. Olivia is a Chief great-grand dauther. He's local so we'll be using fresh semen. Bandit has some beautiful get being shown and a few have finished.

If all goes well I just may have a puppy in the ring at Nationals 2010.

Wish us luck!

Sue
