My girl Belle is prenant with her first litter. She is 46 days from ovulation, 44 days from first breeding and 42 days from last breeding.
She has gained 10lbs, and I have noticed that her back teats look shiny. She has gained more than 7 inches in diameter around her belly. I am concerned that she might be developing water puppies. She has always drank more water than my other dogs prior to being pregnant, but I don't believe that she is drinking more than her norm.
I looked at cranberry pills at walmart, and there are 2 kinds, the carnberry pills and the cranberry extract. They both say they're for urinary health but says nothing about being a natural diuretic. I know they change the pH so that it inhibits bacteria growth but how does that help with water puppies?
Any advice is greatly appreciated. I am getting worried. Also, what is your opinion on what day the c-section should be performed? I have heard different opinions and wanted to get more information. Thanks
Heather
you know which day she ovulated on ?
count 63 days. i usually take them at 62 to prevent a midnight run... start taking her temp the last week, twice a day. same times each day (ie: 7am/7pm, etc)
once it drops to 99 and stays down she is very close.... i give 1 triple strength cranberry starting the last 3 weeks adn go to 2 triple strength cranberry supplements the last 2 weeks. i feed raw the last month so i can control the amount of sodium in the diet.

Re Water Puppies
Heather, I just recently had the exact same problem (for the 3rd time, different bitch ) You should get another ultrasound as the others said. Your vet should definately be able to see water on the puppies at this stage. Mines did. My bitches had the shiny rings around the back nipples. I started feeding her a raw diet (to control the sodium intake) as soon as I saw the shiny nipple rings. We did Lasix for the last 12 days, and sodium free water too. My vet is a reproductive specialist and a breeder herself and she swears that the cranberry supplements do nothing to help with water puppies. We had 6 puppies, we lost 1 at birth because it was so very badly water logged. The others survived. I really feel without the sodium free diet/water and the Lasix the outcome would not have been so good. Good Luck, maybe you could keep us posted. It may help someone else.

Re: worried about water puppies
You could also do another u/s. Did this with my bitch, and proved she had extra fluid, which then we started hydrochlorithiazide. But I definately would recommend another u/s.

Also, get her up and walking around

Re: worried about water puppies
I recently had the same worry, but my girl didn't have shiny nipple area. I just thought she was drinking more water than usual, so I was concerned. This also seemed to start about 10 days before due date. I switched her from kibble to raw blend (Oma's Pride, but there are many brands) to be sure she wasn't getting any more salt than needed.
If you did progesterone testing, you can calculate 63 days from ovulation for delivery. We scheduled for the 62nd day, but she went in on the 61st day, and all was good. Start taking her temp twice daily 7 days prior to due date and watch for it to drop below 99 and the other signs such as nesting, milk coming in and refusing to eat.
Good luck!
