is it worth a titer to see if maybe he had some of the shots??

it could be possible he had some of them at one time...
maybe just one titer will give you some idea of none are there..at least

the spca told me to just go ahead and revaccinate Max...when we found out the records were false..just started at top
with a rescue like Max and Nacho..good chance he has not had any shots at all

Rae...this happened with Max..and......

Max was to go on therapy program here..and had to a recheck on his vaccines. turns out that he was turned back into the breeder cause of abuse and forged the vet reports. HE had no vaccines.
we started off with the basic puppy shots
he was a year and half old already
I felt that was best for him really..
did alot of thinking
but the parvo was important
the distemper the vet suggested too
I did them all but the LEPTO which I never use
did the basic shots like a puppy in a few visits ..spaced apart
from then on..I will titer him and see how the blood tests show

I felt it was best for Max and me too..
I just did what the vet suggested..
he had no immunity built up to anything..

now the strange part..he was neutered..with no shots. we had no idea that the vet records were false until we found out his background and he was beaten. LIKELY never took him to a vet at all...cause of that..
so I had to start all over again but feel better knowing that he has the shots.

Thanks Judy!

I appreciate your reply. What state do you live in?

yes i would....

becasue i have confidence .... i have total faith in holistic approach to vet care...
but again i would want you to talk to a holstic vet and set up a game plan....i would want you to read on the subject as you would your own child...
the other side of my road is protected wet land....ticks and mosquitoes are a way of life...thats why i can find so may frog heheheh..
a good book for you to start with is...."four paws five direction" written by a vet Dr Schwartz....
i love this book.....its on traditonal chiense medication for pets....or TCM....

I definitely don't have a flea/tick problem

and we have a 'frog' pond that also has goldfish. I have a natural spring in my yard, that forms a creek when it rains that turns into a swamp when it stops. Always wet. The begining of the spring/waterway is across the street and it's ALWAYS wet, as in certified swampland and can not be built on. Across the street on the other side is 50 acres of farmland. I live in NC, right on the SC border. Even if I could manage to cut back on the mosquito population in my yard, which I doubt I would, it wouldn't even make a dent in the population all around me. So would you still trust the blackwalnut with your dogs? I really do want to steer away from chemicals like that for Audrey, but I'm scared of heartworms.

my suggestion....

blackwalnut is given 2 times a week...but along with the blackwalnut i use lyme in my yard...that keeps kill the fleas and ticks....and i have an acre of land.....also i hang citronella oil soak rags around the yard....
my newphews catch me about 10 bullfrogs....i have a tub i fill with water and make a comfy home for them for the summer...i have a blacklight to attract the bugs to their little area....they are incrediable in the bugs they catch.....i swear the frogs come running from the pond to live in my tub for the summer....
so its a life style...their are many little pcs that go with being holistic.....
I would find a holistic vet make an appointment for a meet and greet bring a list and see how it fits into your lifestyle....

I live in an area where heartworm is in the highest rate

for the whole country. If you look at the 'heartworm' map, the Southeastern US has the most, and where I live has the highest rating there is. So you think the blackwalnut would be enough? I have already had 2 dogs heartworm positive when I slacked of on the preventitive, and I have seen mosquitos in January here.

blackwalnut is a herb.....

i am 90% holistic in medicating my dogs.... (yes i do use antibotics but very rarely)...blackwalnut has been used for years in treating heartworm....i would consult with a holistic vet and have them get you on the right path....
one thing is you cannot pick and choose how you do holistic it has to be a life style...i raw feed i use all natural products....i believe in vits for my dogs....
i live in mass and have never had a problem with heartworms in over 20 years...and i live 50 ft from a pond....

judy wilson's picture

as a puppy i do....

all my vaccines....then i only do rabies....and i titer every two years...but i also raw feed and yes i do think thats makes a differences...in their immune system....
i have never used heartworm meds...twice a month i give them blackwalnut....i have never had a problem with ticks and fleas....if i do go walking in the deep woods...i spray a rag with off and rub the dogs down....

Just want the minimum, he has had nothing as of yet

he is nine months, no other contact with dogs outside of our other dog. He is a rescue and I really doubt he had any other shots so I'm almost thinking of just doing Rabies

So that means

A blood draw, and lab work? It's not the money just wondering as I wouldn't even know what to ask the vet. for, if I wanted to check instead of automatically giving shots.

luvwinnie's picture

Parvo, distemper and rabies...but I am a

minimalist when it comes to vaccines. We titer rather than re-vaccinate automatically. We also try to get theimerosol free vaccines.

I think it depends on your lifestyle and where

you live. Rabies is the only one required.

All of our dogs came to us as adult dogs and most had vet records showed that they had been vaccinated with DHLPP, either by previous owners, shelter or rescue organization so I do not revaccinate but will titer.

I wouldn't bypass the Parvo since this dog is still relatively y

Even a dog that you say will not be leaving your yard can still be exposed to some viruses and diseases, especially if for instance you have deer visiting your yard and a resulting exposure to Lymes Disease.

There are two diseases that are "zoonotic" which means

they can transfer from animal to man...and they are Rabies and Distemper. All others are given for the protection of the animal.

luvwinnie's picture

does he have allergies?

nm

luvwinnie's picture

Right...we pay about $80 per titer I think.

Re: as a puppy i do....

Could you explain what black walnut is and how you use it in place of heartworm meds?
