I have my dogs checked for worms or eggs often like every 2 months. Never any sign of any, except for the Tape worms, in Buddy a couple of weeks ago, home diagnosed, with Ya'll's help. I used Diatomemaceous earth, one teaspoon for Bud, and 1/2 teaspoon for Brother, once a day. The vet knew of this, and we found no tape worms or segments or eggs in Buds poo at the vet check Thursday.
Buddy had Advantage+ in November. Brother had Frontline+ in December. The vet said something about floatation, is that the best way to check a sample from a dog? Do the dogs need the Advantage in the winter?

Re: Thanks
sorry, Steve, that made me LOL... I love that you "took one for the team" and tested out the DE powder remedy :0)

Thanks Steve, for the DE info especially...
as I'm much too old to get pregnant, and I've been "fixed" anyway I doubt I'll get much of a craving to munch a mouthful of dirt. LOL
Thanks
The vet does the looking at this clinic, he's in a small town. The DE for your pool, it's not good to eat, is not the same as food grade DE, which is what I use. It is safe as a food additive. I ate a big spoon in water before I gave it to my Bulldogs, [my doctor is closer] and no ill effects.

my opinions
Advantage is for fleas/ticks and if you get a definite period of frost where you live (I don't in SoCal) then you don't need it during the winter months, and many give March or April thru October. If you give heartworm medication however, that must be given yearround. The incubation for heartworms is 6mos so when the vet tells you that you need an annual check for heartworms but you have been giving the medication yearround, some experts say its an income ploy but I cannot relate more than that at this time.
I admit I don't know much about DE except that we put it in my pool filter system periodically, but have never given it to my dogs. The "floatation" the vet mentioned is the customary fecal exam...a bit of poop (about 1T)fresh is suspended in a special container and after a couple hours the eggs and worm casings will float to the top which can be examined microscopically. In some offices the techs perform the exam, other places the vet does it, and usually if a tech finds "evidence" the vet will recheck the sample for confirmation before dispensing medication.
