very upset... Had stenotic nares done with palate trim and...

The Dr, who is listed as a vet on here and very well known with BDs, told me Diesel needed his palate trimmed or he would have trouble making it through the summer and said the stenotic nares should be done at the same time. So Diesel does have a very raspy heavy beathing that comes from a lot of excitement or over-exhilerating himself and it had me concerned concluding to me seeing the specialist. So I had the surgery done almost 2 weeks ago and he is as bad as ever probably worse now than he ever was.... I have a follow up with the vet this week and will address this and I'm sure there is nothing that can be done now but I know they have the $1700 they charged me for the procedure and a dog that's the same but IMO actually sounds worse. At first I figured it could be his throat is still swollen from the procedure but its been 11 days and each day it seems like he gets worse and not better. I guess this is a vent to who is listening but also WHY is this happening and did they rip me off or do something wrong???? He is my everything this dog as is every1 heres' dog is to them and I am more than concerned now considering this vet is supposed to be one of the BEST in the tri-state area (ny/nj)

No problem.....

For ANY surgical procedure I always call around for quotes.

I thought it was too much too

and I said something and they wouldn't help on the price. Sucks but is what it is I guess, I'm just gonna hope for the best but thanks for your imput

As expected....

This is a procedure that it does take time to heal so it sounds worse for the dog before it gets better. Different healing times for all dogs. Also unfortunately this is a procedure (palate trimming) that sometimes has to be done more than once because the vet needs/wants to be conservative on how much he trims off. Which is a good thing. Too much trimming and you have a dog that is choking everytime it eats, drinks, or even breaths too hard. So the dog might sound the same after healing but should be atleast breathing better. Usually the sound is from the throat not the nares so the nares won't need to be done again. My vet does the procedure after a certain age ( which I can't remember) because of growth.
Now this is only my opinion but $1700 was too much. I had it done for less than $800.

Javier

thanks all that responded!!

just hoping for the best

thank you and..

I will be civil cause otherwise the vet is great and not sure how this sounds but I still want to bring both my EBs there I'm just concerned that the surgery didn't do anything cause there really is a different problem that might need fixing and I spent all this money for no improvement. The people in the office with other EBs couldn't stop bragging about the vet and I hope they are right and I am just being overly paranoid.

I would cut back on the exercise/walks until the swelling goes d

may be contributing to his problems.

From a medical standpoint...

I can say that i see common surgeries in humans all the time at my work that do not turn out as expected. I see patients mad because they think the doctors messed them up, and in reality its simply that no surgery is 100% without any downsides and no surgery is 100% sucessful in all of the patients that have it. Complications/infections/ect..can arise and things dont go as planned. Statistically all surgeries have a sucess rate and unfortunatly some people and dogs fall into the small percentages that surgeries don't help. I myselfr have a pinche dnerve in my back and my only options are physical therapy/chiropracter or surgery, i will not have surgery unless i absolutley lose the ability to walk and they say its my only option because it carries such a high fail rate. So think of it like that, your boy may simply be taking longer to recover or the surgery may not have worked for him.

Michael...

you have every right to go there and ask questions but I suggest to you that you approach this with an open attitude and not begin to accuse. It could be that your dog is taking a bit longer than average to heal, or that he has some minor infection going on at this time, or its Spring and allergies are added to the mix of surgery and healing, causing some seasonal swelling...so ASK what can be done to make these days now better for your bulldog...ask if the vet thinks it may be allergy-related and if so, is there some OTC product that you should be using, or do you have to wait for complete healing? Also, you should not have to pay for this visit as it is a surgery-followup and be sure that you tell the vet that you feel the dog needs a second surgery-followup in another 2wks if indeed you do feel this way...talk it out beforehand so there isn't any arguing afterward.

Sorry to hear this. I was supposed to have Farley done

as well on the 13th but a sneaky URI derailed us until next month. Good luck!! I hope your baby starts healing.

he goes back this week

when he is calm there is nothing of concern but as soon as he gets excited or works himself a bit his mouth drops open with tongue out and almost sounds painful how hard he breaths. I'm gonna keep his activity to a minimum till he goes back. The Dr gave me antibiotics but for only the first 5 days after surgery which have been gone a week or so now. thank you too for your response

I will try that for sure and...

To an extent that makes me feel better. Since the surgery I have soaked his kibble for like 15 min in hot water so that when he eats it, its almost completely soft and I keep his water dish low and with ice cubes in it so that he can only take little amounts at a time. If the Dr didn't tell me how I was going to see night and day differences with him I wouldn't be as concerned but he can't even go for a walk down the street without gasping for air and snorting a lot while doing so. Thank you for your imput tho, definitely settles me a bit

It takes time for the swelling to go down

He will have swelling and inflamation in his throat and nasal passages due to the surgery for a couple of weeks. Is he in any antibiotics? It's possible he may have a bit of a respiratory infection due to the annestesia. I would take him back to the Vet ASAP for a check-up to address your concerns.

he is still healing

it can take 2-4 weeks for swelling to go down. Every time he eats and breaths it irritates his throat.

You might give him a bowl of chicken broth to sooth his throat.

He should be doing better soon.

Doesn't always turn out

how you would like or how everyone says it will. I've had a horrible experience with a palette surgery and I'm sorry I ever had it done on the bitch. Honestly I think the vet basically ruined her.

She was not noisey but did a lot of up chucking when she would run and then stop. I figured the palette surgery would fix that...but it didn't and she is now very noisey and the puking has never stopped but has actually gotten worse. I have a great deal of quilt putting through a surgery that has actually made it all worse. The vet did say she had the longest and thickest palette he has ever seen. Maybe he took too much...I don't know.

So IMO unless it is life threatening I will never have another palette done.

Hope you dog comes around in another couple of weeks. He should get better after the throat irritation and swelling goes down.
