Vaccination Question

Bully is due for his annual check-up and shots this week (distemper, lyme's disease, and one other, I think). I've made the appointment and am not seriously considering not getting the shots, but I am a little worried.

Last year, he developed a horrible case of hemorrhagic gastroenteritis right after being vaccinated. (One of his shots last year was for rabies.) I nearly lost him and wound up having to take him to the emergency hospital at the University of Pennsylvania, where he stayed for four days.

Does anyone know of a connection between vaccinations and gastroenteritis? Should I be worried?

Re: Vaccination Question

I agree, get a titer test done. If the dog was vaccinated last year, you may not need the vaccines this year. If you do, then I would definitely NOT give them all at once. I would spread them out over a series of weeks.
A lot of vets are doing the titer tests and only vaccinating when need be, just as rabies is once every 3 years. If you give all of the vaccines at one time and there is a reaction, you have no idea which one of those vaccines caused the reaction.

I don't know about a connection but...

our Ollie had HGE and it was horrible, he had to be at the vet's for 2 days getting iv fluids. I'm not sure if he had shots before that or not, I'll have to look it up. I'm very cautious about vaccinations. I know that titers are expensive, but the less vaccines the better.

before i gave any more vaccines i ......

would have a titer test done....i would not risk any kind of reaction,,,,yearly shots are a money maker for vets their useless....get a titer done this a blood test....if you feel shots are necessary split them up....giving all that in one dose for any breed of dog is out of line....if your vet does not understand find another one who up to date with vaccine protocal....

Hmmmm

I'm in Canada and I go to a holistic vet. She doesn't give "yearly shots" as most vets do. She stated to me;

Unless your dog is going to be in the back country with wild animals it's not something I would give.

She does yearly tests for heartworm etc. but Teela only had one set of shots as a pup and I think it was for Parvo/distemper...that's it.

Perhaps seek a holistic vet in your area.

I would think that would be food related

And not caused by vaccines. At least I have never heard of it.

one was prob his parvo vaccine

which could give him the symptoms of parvo.

I would suggest you get his titers done to see if he needs the vaccine..Also many vets now believe just like human children that after a certain age they no longer need to vaccines.
