miss tillie mae has another uti? back on sulfamethoxazole. this will be her 2nd month, again. she was uti free right after her spay a few months ago. they did a sterile sample at that time while she was under and it was clean. about 3 weeks ago i noticed blood in her urine as the girls were doing a 'pee-off' as we were walking the woods at gramma's house. she does NOT leak urine. does NOT have to go out continously. after looking at her urine sample yesterday, vet thinks it may be vaginitus or vulva related as she saw some tissue/skin cells in the sample with a few red and white blood cells. there is NO discharge. i hate to keep her on the antibiotics. i just don't think it is good for her. any reccomendations? she eats royal canin bulldog, gets solid gold seameal and cranberry extract added to her food, drinks filtered, flowing water from a drinkwell pet fountain. she does not seem to be in pain, but we know bullies. i will try to clean her after she urinates and use gold bond powder on her. we will see how that goes. i am also considering a holistic vet visit. we will add daily yogurt to try and keep some good bacteria in her. what do you guys think? vet also mentioned possible vulvaplasty....
thank you in advance.

Hey Lady....
I am not gonna give great advice, I don't usually have any! But I have a girl with repetitive UTI issues and might be able to help some. I give a 500mg cranberry powder supplement 2 x daily, and the plain, fat free yogurt as well. She does remarkably well with those two things in her diet.
Best wishes to you...and did you get another bully? I think I missed something?

Try cleaning her with a non alcoholic mouthwash if she is irrita
Listerine if not too irritated then dry and dust with Gold Bond. This may help in addition to the anti biotics you are giving. I would also try giving cranberry pills daily.

uti vs. vaginitis, any inout would be appreciated
Do dogs get yeast infections there? If so could white vinegar be used to just gently wipe the dog, and powder after?

I've dealt with both...
UTI is an infection that involves the bladder nd the exit tract...its more "internal" whereas vaginitis is closer to the exit portal of the body and can also be treated with antibiotics but it often comes from a bitch built 'low to the ground or who squats low to pee' or sometimes resulting from a heat cycle, particularly if the bitch wasn't cleaned up daily and bathed during the heat cycle. I've had vaginitis be misdiagnosed as a possible pyometra and was 'scared into' doing a hysterectomy on an old bitch when it wasn't necessary...and the surgery was hard on her (9yrs old)! When a bitch is stinky, sticky or appears irritated around her vulva, I would suspect vaginitis. When she is peeing often, or shows traces of blood in her urine, its UTI, and the infection involves the bladder, etc.

hello indybulldog!
thank you for the info. it could be yeast, but i really don't see or smell any indication of that. we will clean and powder her after urination and see how that goes. know your info will go into my bulldog handbook. thanks again.
