Any tips on how to collect from a 4 month on bitch?? We suspect a UTI and my Vet wants me to collect a urine sample but that is easier said than done. Does anyone have any suggestions that have worked for them?

Actually it was my 16 year old who came up with it. He set up her xpen which she know is ok to pottie in and laid down some of our heavy clear plastic. He was so excited when she started to go that he yelled and startled her so she stopped. Then she went some more and we sucked it up and put it in the sterile cup. It was fresh clean plastic and as close to sterile as we were going to get. My Vet said that was fine as long as we got a mid stream catch. Now it's sitting in the Fridge waiting for them to open! Thanks for all the ideas and tips!!!!

the bottle from the vet is sterile already.. if you find you can not quite fit it under in time.. get someone to give you hand.. lift up the bum as the puppy squatts and take aim..lol
believe me it is easier with a puppy then an adult bulldog anyday to get a urine sample any breed for that matter. this way works everytime.. I had to do it more then once..

get the container from the vet open up a close hanger..bend it around the top and use the rest for a handle.. and as the pup squats put the container under it works really well and easy to do..

We have a foot of snow on the ground and a pretty good size yard. Picture us all following her around with pie pans waiting for the drop and squat. My son is going to help me put a xpen out on our patio. She is used to going in that so we will be within arms reach on either side. Maybe one of us can make a clean catch. Oh the things we do. I do like the idea of something larger like a cake pan lid. Thanks for the ideas!!
I take the lid off of a small tupperware type container and follow the girl out and when she "squats" I slip the lid under her. That works if you don't have snow right now. I then use a clean syringe and take the syringe with the sample in to my vet.

She is by far the toughest nut I've had to house break. She never pee's in her crate but goes on everybullies bedding so that I have to wash 100% every day. (I think shes just claiming their beds??) I have a sterile container from the Vet to put it in once I finally collect but she's really fast and after trying to slip the Pie pan under her several times she tries to get as far from me as possible before squatting. If I didn't need the sample I'd find this quite funny. I was hoping to avoid the needle at the Vet but looks like if she doesn't cooperate I may not have a choice. We do have Ceramic tile in the Kitchen and I guess I can lock her in so she'll have to go on the floor and get a sample that way but it seems kinda mean to make her have a accident. What do you think?? and would that be "Clean" enough for them to check for the UTI?

Obviously you are working on housetraining, or maybe she is reliably trained already, but if you think she will have an accident in her kennel, then don't put any padding or similar on the floor of it, and there should be a "ridge around the edge where some urine will collect...of course its not a 'clean sample' but it would be a 'last resort' collection. Other options are to use a very thin (ie, shallow) pieplate or similar from a 'pot pie' and when she squats to pee, quickly slip it under her to catch some urine...you have to be quick and agile to do this and with a young dog=short legs, it may not be easily doable. If you collect urine and cannot get it to your vet within an hour of collection, put it in an airtight container (plastic baggie will do with ziplock closure) and put it in your refrig. Its best to have the urine tested ASAP however, and there's always the option of taking the dog to the vet, giving her water before you go, and they can do a needle-draw directly into the bladder for a sterile sample (not contaminated by any outside source). There may be an extra small fee for this service.

I'm in the phone book...no address given, but the phone number is listed. I haven't listed my address for years...when I started working with Rescue, I didn't want people coming around who thought they could see what might be available by looking in my yard (where my own dogs were)!!
We DID IT!

Re: Ok..I can try that! Sounds easy and DRY :)
You can get a dollar store ladle and hold under when she squats. Good luck.

I had to do this on a small puppy one time..
get the container from the vet
open up a close hanger..bend it around the top

it works really well
and easy to do..
I'm going to have to enlist family members to help!

this has worked for me in the past

Yes we are still house training. :(
