He had his ultrasound today and they said it's not three big stones like they initially thought but it's many many little stones some of which are big enough to block his ureter. The Dr. said he doesn't think it will block it right away but he also doesn't want to put his foot in his mouth and then have it happen. The recommendation is to do the surgery to remove everything in his bladder and then send them out to see what they're made of. He said if I leave them there he'll keep getting infections and like I said before it could cause a blockage. So, I guess I'm going to have the surgery done sooner rather than later. What would you all do?
I'd opt for the surgery..
no question. What are your choices? They need to come out. I've had kidney stones and they are very painful. I would definitely have the surgery ASAP
I don't rescue animals because I want to feel better about myself, or morally superior to anyone. The best part of my life with animals is the humility they teach and the humanity the foster.

male dog do the surgery......
blockage from stones is very seriouse in a male.....but make sure you have a game plan for after the surgery....stones form for a reason...and many dogs have to go on special diets....
i am sure their is a forum out their with dogs with stones...maybe they can help...
good luck....
we will all keep you in our prayers....
Thanks. :)
I feel much better now about doing it.
My vet said he can't tell what kind they are until
he gets them out and has them analyzed. I'm going to get it done and I already applied for membership to the yahoo group. My vet knows I never feed anything he tells me too because i do grain free premium food and doesn't agree with it so if I have to go against him again he won't be surprised. lol Thanks for your opinion.
bigger problem for boy
because the stone if gets into urethra can block at the os penis(bone in a dogs penis) and sometimes cannot be flushed back into the bladder and if this happens the dogs plumbing has to be rerouted to resemble females(urinate to the rear).

To those who understand no explanation is needed. To those who don't no explanation is possible.
Do the surgery
Unless they are struvite which are dissolvable by RX food I would do the surgery. If your baby blocks he can die. Once the stones come out, pay the extra money to send them off to Univ of MN (I believe it is) and have them analyzed. They may look like one type on the outside but the center may be another sort. If they are calcium oxalate they have spurs like a jack(like you played with as a kid) and are very painful as the stick in the side of the bladder. Most RX diets do not work on the calcium or urate type stones. Sue mentioned the yahoo group that is wonderful and a great source of assistance and help. The Fuzzer Diet has kept my friend Stephanies bulldog Samson from having stones for about 4 yrs now. Good luck with your baby!!

Thank you so much.
I'll call tmrw and schedule it for next week. I almost turned the car around today and brought him back so it could be done tmrw but I was so stressed I just wanted him home. They said his heart and blood work was great and they've never had a bulldog aspirate after surgery so I think he'll be in good hands.
I'll apply for the forum right away so I'm ready. I appreciate the help.
do it now
you do not want to risk a blockage cuz then it's even more dangerous and serious. And, the sooner they are out and the type is determined, the sooner a course of action can be started.
In the meantime, here is the link to the yahoo group I told you about. You have to request membership. Once approved, you can start reading the site, looking at all their links, reading up on all the various types of stones, home cook recipes, etc so when the results come back, you can be one step ahead and can run some things past the vet.

they did a an ultrasound here ...
i guess and they could see the type of stones they were..
some are different then the other ones..
well maybe the surgery is best for your Man there..
especially if it hurts..
Tammy had a heck of time....when I had her....
the food did though make a world of diffence but took a long time to work
and like you said being female
she might have been able to get away without the surgery
No, because he doesn't know
what kind of stones they are so he doesn't know if a food change will help them.
Thanks. :)
That's how I feel too, I don't want it to turn into something life threatening.
do the surgery
to prevent anything further from happening, please let us know
me either..
but we weighed out the issue with her weight and decided that had to come off first..
but the uniary food did really help
did you vet suggest you try a food change for your bully??
I am not experienced in the medical field of bulldogs..but just a thought
someone on here will have better ideas for you and your bully i am sure..
It's not fun to see all that blood.
My bulldog is overweight too and I asked how he would cut through all the fat and he said very carefully so he didn't advise me to take some weight off first.
my pug had lots of blood too...
was not a good scene at all..
I remember getting up with her through the nights
it was really touch and go for surgery with her too..
she was extremely overweight and the vet did not want to do the surgery
until her weight came down a bit as well
in the end she did not need it..
but like I said..she lives with my ex..and still has a few issues with her bladder
she is 11 now..and this started about 4 years go...when she was 7
That's probably why the pug didn't need surgery
I guess girls have a bigger opening and a blockage won't happen like it will with a boy. They said he's probably uncomfortable and they gave me pain meds and abx. His bladder is swollen and there is blood so they stones must be cutting him.
They took a digital xray yesterday and they did an ultrasound today.
and I had a female pug.....
she lives with my ex..
but never did need the surgery
they came on a bit later in her life too
she had lots of infections before the stones hit..
maybe it best to get it over with ..anyhow
must hurt the dog you would think right??
did they take a bunch of exrays..??
Thanks.
I kind of regret not letting them do it tmrw but with all the drama over the last two days I wanted him home with me before the surgery just in case. I hope it's ok to wait til next week.
No, he didn't say anything about that
He doesn't know what kind they are so he doesn't know if a food change will help. My fear is that if I wait too long they'll get bigger or one of the bigger ones will block his ureter. He said if the dog were a girl it would be ok to not do the surgery but it's a bigger deal for a boy.
I had this with a pug years ago....
they put her on uniary kind of dogfood
and she had to get out to pee...every few hours until the stones started to shrink..
but it did help her out
she never did need surgery...
but it took a long time for them to shrink at all
did the vet mention anything about them shrinking...??
I wouldn't wait
it's too much of a risk.
Cathy
when she first came home
One more voice for doing surgery asap.
I see no benefits to waiting, and the risk of a further problem is real. Good luck!
