Tug needs help!!

We have been trying to wean Tug off the Steroids over the past few weeks so he can get allergy testing done. It seems to be taking a toll on him though and i'm really concerned. At the vet appointment the ladies were raving about how big he has gotten (68lbs) and about how healthy and good his coat looked.

He is now covered in bumps all over, doesn't have an appetite and hardly eats, he doesn't want to move at all. He looks like he's lost at least 10 lbs. He didn't want to get out of bed this morning but when he finaly did he threw up what appeared to be a bunch of stomach bile. I called the vet to try and get him inthis morning but the Dr won't be in until tomorrow so we scheduled for first thing int he morning.

I was curious if anybody else had taken theirs off of steroids and if so did they experience any of these issues.

what are you feeding? i would get a blood allergy test

its about 300 bucks and sent to california. I would not do the skin scraping as the blood is better.

if you are feeding commercial kibble i would check in to high allergy formula. NO GRAINS or go raw. It takes about a month to see the change in coat.

Give him a bath, dump a box of baking soda in the tub and rince him over and over in the baking soda water. Dont rince it off with clean water. It should sooth his skin.

We had a similar experience with our first bulldog, Rocky

Our Rocky had been taking prednisone for quite a long time for allergy and skin issues.
When we would gradually try to wean him off the meds he would become very lethargic. He also lost weight as steroids cause weight gain.
He also developed bumps all over and it was determined that they were calcinosis cutis which is a side effect of Cushings syndrome. Dogs sometimes develop Cushings after long term steriod use.
If you do a google search of Canine Cushings you can research more about it and it's effects.
This may not be what your Tug is experiencing but you might want to read a bit and if you think Tugs symptoms fit, mention it's possibility to your vet as it is not something they usually consider as it is a bit rare.

Re: what are you feeding? i would get a blood allergy test

He is on Natural Balance duck and potato. We tried to get the allergy test done but the lab said he would have to be off the steroids (he's on tablets not injectables) for 60 days prior to doing the test.

Mason does the same thing when off of prednisone

It's been several years since Mason had the blood allergy test so I don't remember how we even got through the weeks without prednisone/benadryl or if we even did go off the benadryl. Even now after he has had the allergy testing he is still on prednisone and benadryl because he breaks out in hives and itches like crazy without it. He is on natural balance fish and sweet potato food but now he has really yeasty ears with this food so as soon as the new bison food comes out by natural balance I am going to try that. The thing with what Judy said with putting him on a bland diet like hamburger and rice, he might be allergic to those things...Mason is allergic to both of those things. Like Vicky said if he is not already on a grain free diet then I would switch him to that. Mason will be 6 in April and I have yet to find out exactly what makes him itch so bad because of course the blood test can't tell you every single thing they are allergic to. But he is allergic to beef, chicken, some grasses, cotton and so many things so he probably is allergic to my carpet but with living in a carpeted apartment there really isn't anything that I can do about that. I hate having to give him prenisone all the time but I have tried everything else and nothing else has helped his itching and sometimes even with the prenisone and benadryl he itches so its frustrating. Good luck with Tug, Mason knows how he feels.

go a bland diet....

go on a very bland diet some brown rice and boiled hamburger....i would also get some tagament or some tums...when dogs are on pred for a long time it can cause gastric upset.....they also have a gastric upset when first off some times for a week....i would only give ice cubes for him to lick....after you get him on some tums i would start vit c 500mg once a day....this will help with his joints.....
just go slow....small meals vs large ones...pred takes alot out of dogs...and is used by to many vets as a bandaid....
if you can keep him on a hambureger rice diet for a couple of weeks maybe you can research some grain free foods....or even home cooking for him...
good luck and keep us posted....
