I've read about and heard of so many different opinions when it comes to bathing dogs, especially bullies.
To my way of thinking a dog in the wild does not bathe, at least not in the sense of plenty of fresh water and perfumy/soapy products. So why would a domestic dog be any different? Short of becoming very dirty from play outside, etc, does a bully need a bath on any kind of a regular basis at all? They don't seem to be a particularly odorous dog (I'm talkin the coat now, not the inner workings). And with the potential for problems when those wrinkles, pockets, ears, and toes get wet/stay wet, I see more reasons to NOT bathe than to bathe.
Thoughts, please.

Excellent response, David.
Best wishes to you and your new pup!

Thx everyone, for the advice...
...it's helped a lot.
Obviously we were going to bathe our pup, but we just weren't sure how often was safe/necssary. But now I realize we were a bit more scared of it than we needed to be. I think that bath time with some good shampoos like the ones you've recommended, some good checking over, and a thorough drying off afterwards will prove to be another great way for us to bond with our new baby. Hopefully she'll enjoy it too!
Thx again.

I do bathe
Mr. Higgins every 2 weeks along with a nail clip. Nice clean sweet smelling boy and sleeps with me about 1/2 the time. I check him over really well after a bath. I believe he feels better.

agreed once a week (Sunday) and I have 6 dogs
they all sleep with me and although they hate baths, they run like crazy afterwards. I guess they shed a pound of 2 of dirt/grease and feel lighter. Their furs are always soft and shiny and less shedding. I blow dry all 6, clean their ears and powder their tails for the 2 bullies. I have 2 bullies and 4 chis it took me about 3 hrs to give all of them a bath, then do 2 loads of laundry for their towels and clothes during winter, one loads in the summer. They are just like kids, lots of work!

Every Friday..Rain or Shine!
We do bathes, dry, wiskers, ears, teeth, tails, All wrinkles & pockets, nails and between toes and YES, anal glands. Beautiful coats and happy dogs! My girls actually try to get on the grooming tables because they get a treat when we are done. I was lucky to have a AWESOME mentor who taught we how to do it (and do it right).

nope not if your using the right product
its all in the product. Now if your bathing with some crap you buy at Petco on a daily basis then i may say yes, your going to have issues that may dry out the natural oils in the coat or cause flaky skin.
Most products sold by DVM are mild enough that they can be sued on a daily basis such as Maleseb and Releif. But i dont like to use Malaseb daily because i do think it can kill of some normal flora. I prefer the relief daily.
Avoid synthetic fragrant shampoos and you should be fine.
Mane and Tail is also a very affordable shampoo used on humans, horses and dogs as well and sheep. This is one of my most cmmon shampoos and i also use the conditioner as well.

So for all the regular bathers...
...no issues at all to support the "too much bathing more harm than good" theory?

Not very often
We live up in NW Ontario too and barring any unforeseen playdates with a mud puddle we don't bathe very often at all (unless going to trials).... maybe every 8 weeks or so. We use a holistic oatmeal shampoo that seems to work well and we don't even wet his tail pocket, we just pull out the dead hair which seems to keep it in good health.
Though bath time does offer opportunities for candid shots:

We only bathe on an
"as needed" basis. (Visually dirty, smelly etc). We bathe about once every month or two. I agree about it not being great for the wrinkles to be wet so much. =)

My 3 dogs are all indoor dogs...
I bath then before shows but when we're not showing I don't bathe them often at all.

I bathe weekly or at least every 10 days...
All my reasons--
It's a time when I can feel and check them from head to toe to see if there are lumps, bumps, or skin problems.
A weekly bath washes off all the dead loose hairs, which means they shed less. I don't brush them.
I put a cotton ball in each ear to prevent water from getting in the ears and I don't spray water over their heads. I use a wash cloth on faces and heads. I clean ears out of the tub.
They feel great after a bath. They like to be clean and soft and I like them to be clean and soft. I can't stand a stinky or greasy feeling coat!
They sleep with us and I'm not sleeping with a stinky dog.
I use Chlorhexiderm shampoo which is mild enough to use every day if you want to. It's not detergent or soap based.
I use a cool air hair dryer to dry all the crevices, so no moisture problems develop.
4 out of 5 of our dogs have tight or twisty tails, so bathing keeps bacteria and irritation away.
They hate the idea of going to take their bath, but they all stand obediently for it and they LOVE, LOVE, LOVE how they feel afterwords.
Weekly routine bath and grooming is a good way to get a dog used to being handled all over. They learn to stand obediently and accept touch.

I bath once every two to four weeks (Pics)
Hi Dave I bath my dogs once every two to four weeks depending on the dog. I do however check folds, tail pockets etc on a bi-weekly basis. I feed Natural Balance Fish and Potato and one bitch in on the Natural Balance Vegetarian formula and I must say since I switched my bullies to this food I don't have tear stains, dirty ears, runny eyes, tail pocket issues or funk under the nose rope like I did before when they were eating another brand of dog food. Now I'm not saying that all dogs will do better on Natural Balance but my dogs have and the proof is the way they look..... Pictures of my dogs are below.
I use an organic shampoo Vermont Soap Orgains Pet Shampoo.... here is the link... love the stuff....http://www.vermontsoap.com/petwash.shtml
In a pinch when I ran out of the above shampoo I found a shampoo at Petco... TropiClean Hypo-Allergenic Shampoo for Puppies

I really like it too......
If you are having skin issues with yeast, bacteria or fungus Malaseb shampoo works great on the outside but remember to see your vet and follow the directions on the shampoo.....
Hope this helps... I am interested to see what others say.....

Since my guys usually wind up...
sleeping next to me in bed, I bathe them every other week. They love it, I just open the shower door and they both walk in and wait for their shampoos. I feed TOTW salmon and give salmon oil supplements and they both have great coats.

I bathe more often than some...
up until I lost my Otis last March at 8.5yrs, he received a bath every two weeks, yearround because he spent a good deal of time outside, liked to lie on the ground, and he actually seemed to perk up when he came out of the groomers, knowing he was clean and fresh. I did always check the nose wrinkle on each dog to be sure it was clean and dry and rechecked ears too, but never had a concern about toe dampness and related trouble. Dale is now too weak to stand for long periods so I stopped taking her to the groomer and I wipe her down at home but the regular bathing did seem to help with the shedding too, blowing out the old dead hairs as well. I purchased my own shampoo, Malaseb, and that's what the groomer used ALWAYS. I'm one of those "ounce of prevention" people...I give vitamins too. NEVER had a problem with the coats on any of my bulldogs in 35yrs with the exception of one grass-allergic dog that I returned to the breeder at about 5mos old...he did fine at her kennels.
