Tear Stains

Hi All

I notice that below Roxys right eye a reddish tear stain is developing. She does not appear to have any eye issues. There is no discharge. I do wipe her eyes, but it is hardly necessary, and there is never any goo of any kind.

So my questions are first, why do tear stains develop, and second, what can be done about them.

I have seen some pics of dogs that have incredible red stains down their faces that almost end up looking like gashes, and Id certainly like to avoid that.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Great day, all!

Angels eyes

My bully started to get the same thing. Even when I changed him to a raw, grain free diet. I started using Angels eyes every day and the folds under his eyes are white as can be. Just do not buy it in a store. You will get robbed and it isn't cheap. you can get pretty good deals online for about 1/4 of retail.

Thx everyone, for the advice...

...and tips.

In doing some more research I discovered that many issues can cause tear staining. A blocked tear duct may also be an issue, possibly requiring irrigation. Or even a teething puppy can have a blocked duct due to the swelling from teething.

Next trip to the vet we will address the possible causes and make sure we get a handle on it.

Thx
again.

I'm not sure where they come from, but

three of mine have them.  I switched from tap water to filtered water (a brita pitcher), Changed their food, they eat California Natural Herring and Sweet
Potato, and then I use this product called Diamond Eye from vitacoat.  This product really works for me.  I also started to put Gold Bond Powder in their folds as well, this helps keep them dry.  It was suggested by nearly everyone here on the board.  I got a pipet to use to put in on them from my vet, because you can actually place the powder in the fold without getting it into their eyes.

I believe

Tear stains are mostly food and water related. Using filtered water made a big difference in my dogs. Also, the right food is key to avoiding tear stains in my opinion.
