I'm posting for a friend. Her bulldog has a bun type tail that gets smelly and sometimes infected. She's tried gold bond and baby wipes to keep it clean. He's going to be neutered soon and she was wondering while he's under if it is a good idea to dock some of his tail to take care of the problem. Is this something routine or major? Expensive? Painful? Or is there a better way to clean it, I'm not sure what to tell her. Any and all opinions welcome, thanks so much.
You can also use
ear powder with tip...esp if you can find type that not only dries but kills yeast! works well

Sophia has a tight bun tail. SHe also has a deep pocket under it
So, I get her in the sink about once a week. I use the sprayer head and warm water (careful not to use water that is anything but tepid!). I rinse the pocket really well with plain water first, getting it good and wet. Then I use antibacterial dish soap and clean that pocket out well with my fingers. Yuck, but it has to be done! You can wear rubber surgical gloves (I do!) or kitchen gloves, but the heavier glove the less you will be able to really get the tight places. Cleanse well with the soap then spray out well. Repeat once more, cleaning with the soap and then spry well. Make sure to pull all the loose hair out of the pocket each time. I use paper towels to dry, getting all the way up in and around the tail pocket and tail. They I will use a blow dryer on low to get all teh excess moisture dried up. If the pocket or tail look swollen or red, I use Desitin Diaper ointment. I haven't used Gold Bond but it will work as well. With the powder, you can get a plastic ketchup dispenser bottle (like they used to use in diners! The red ones with the thin tip? Or they come in white or whatever, but do you know what I mean?) Anyway, you can use the bottle to get the powder really well up in the pocket.
Have her try that a few times before she has anything docked or cut off! It is well worth it. Also, if her vet is a Bully vet, they should be able to tell her if the tail requires removal or not. If it isn't a Bulldog vet, she needs to find one familiar with tail pocket issues:-)
best of luck to her! Oh, by the way, the more often you clean the tail, the worse it can get. That is what I found anyway. I slowed it down to once a week and have had NO problems since. When I cleaned it daily, it HAD to be cleaned daily. Not sure why it worked like that, but it did!

We had tank's tail clipped
I'm sure everyone has their own opinion, and there are folks who think any unnecessary surgeries/procedures shouldn't be done, but we had Tank's tail clipped while he was getting neutered. He too was getting infections and squishing poop under his tail every time he went, and it looks great after the surgery. I want to say it was around $800-1,000, but I can't remember exactly. He recovered great and we haven't had any complications. I tried to post two pics below for your reference, but I didn't have any good ones of his buns post surgery! It's too bad b/c we thought his tail was perfect, but it kept getting tighter and tighter wound as he got older that it just became impossible to keep perfectly clean and he would get infections.
What kind of ear powder do you use?
I have so much trouble with Spanky's tail and I appreciate any suggestions.
