swollen face and closed eyes

woke up this morning to my 2 1/2 year old female's face swollen, red, and eyes completely closed. Took her straight to the animal ER at 3:30 AM. They checked her out, gave her a shot of Benedryl, Steroids, and Epinephrine. Roughly 7 hrs later we gave her more benadryl by mouth 9at the direction of the vet this morning). She seemed to be getting better but now she is starting to swell again and her eyes are beginning to close. Should I give this a few more hours, or should I take her in to my vet? I suspect she was bitten by something in the yard last night, but can't seem to locate a bite mark and she's not favoring any part of her body that might indicate a bite. Thanks

Mike

dont stop the bendryl....

go for 48 hrs two tabs three times a day for 2 days....i went thru this with wilson who has horrible allerigies...a spider bite him and the same thing happened....the vet said to keep with the bendryl for 2 days...wilson is 53lbs if that helps...
also since you know your baby has that bad of an allergy reaction keep liquid bendryl on hand it will get thru the system faster....
i now have a eppi pen....as all my er vets are 45 mins from me....
good luck keep us posted....

Re: swollen face and closed eyes

Thanks Tammy,

She's breathing just fine. She ate well and is drinking. She's not rubbing her face any longer but still swollen. My thinking is they (vet) can do nothing more for her other than what's already be done.

Re: swollen face and closed eyes

It sounds like a severe allergic reaction to something. Due to the fact it is swelling to that extent, I would be heading back to the vet. In a reaction that severe it could cause breathing problems or even cause the dog to go into shock.

Good luck,
Let us know what happens.

I completely agree with Jacinda.. she may definitely need

more steroids and they can also use injectable benadryl which works better and faster than the pill form. You may not find the bite wound for a few days when it scabs and the swelling subsides. My only concern is that swelling can quickly go from ok to a breathing issue and without notice.

if your thinking lyme no.....

i dont think its a lyme reaction....i have never seen that drastic of a reaction from a tick.. could it happen i wouldnt doubt it....more likely a spider or some thing she ate....wilson has been bitten by ticks and never had that happen....so i would go for a spider...food..ant...some thing like that....bees cause me the biggest problem...

I would at the very least call the Vet

She may need another shot of steroids. I lost a bulldog last year to a sting so I take them all very seriously.

I had a severe reaction in a dog one time......

and it was really terrible.
she continually swelled off and on for the next few days .
now in hers it was a reaction to the rabies vaccine.
we used clorotripilon for sure and it worked out good
she had a very bad reaction where the vet was not close at all on holidays
and it would have been really bad ....called the vet and he said to give
her clorotripilon as well.

I personally would take her back in if the swelling keeps up.
best safe then sorry

both times in my boston her breathing was affected....

keep a close watch on your dog and if no improvements soon, call the vet and take her in.

Re: dont stop the bendryl....

Thanks,

Emma hppends to be 52 pounds. I will stay on top of the situation with the benedryl. I have to ask this. We found a few ticks on hr this morning prior to going to the ER. Is it possible that the ticks caused this reaction?
