Soft poop

Hello! I'm so thrilled to have found this group. My 10 week old Bulldog is eating a mixture of Canidae all stages and California Natural and he's been having soft, mushy poop (not technically diarrea) ever since he got home. The breeder wants me to put him on frozen bil-jac to firm up the poop because he was also on that before he came home. But she doesn't want him on the biljac long--term because she says Bil-jac isn't natural enough. Should I mix the Bil-jac in with his other food or start looking into other options? The vet wanted me to give him white rice and I tried adding some chicken brother to give it flavor but the pup refuses the rice. Same goes for the canned pumpkin. I would rather not put him on medication because he doesn't seem uncomfortable, is gaining wait and is very happy and active. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Soft poop

I would give Benebac. It is the healthy bacteria that should be in the gut. You can order it on line, just search for the best price. Also puppies have to eat a large amount to grow. This will cause a softer poop. They also tend to over drink and this will also make the stool softer.

PS> have to ask about possibility of "worms"??

Did the breeder worm this puppy and was that done therapeutically or did she know there were parasites present? Has your vet done a fecal sample/exam yet? There are parasites that cannot be seen with the naked eye that will show on fecal testing and medication from the vet should take care of that...it can cause stool abnormalities, soft or too many.

Here's my suggestions

First of all, stop mixing dogfoods and settle on one that you like. Combining will just cloud the picture should he have a problem with one certain protein/meat source or one certain grain/starch. If he weren't so young I would tell you to withhold all food until the morning but because he's only 10wks old he does need to eat and more importantly, he needs to take in fluids, so I suggest you go with the proven easy-to-digest cooked rice and lean hamburger, prepared this way: cook one cup raw rice (long or short grain doesn't matter, just not instant) with 2 cups water as directed on package (bring to boil and then simmer covered for about 15mins unless you own a rice cooker which is easier. Just as soon as the rice is done, remove from heat and stir in 1/3lb lightly sauted hamburger meat, no seasoning. Yes, the heat from the rice will finish cooking the meat; yes, the mixture will look like mostly rice; and yes, it may taste "bland" but its supposed to. You can mix in a small amount of low-sodium broth but I suggest you leave it thick and sticky...may need to roll small meatballs size of small walnut to get puppy to eat this, one at a time. This should be enough for 4-5 meals for this youngster. Always offer water after eating. You should be feeding him 3xday. Most dogs will "firm up" after two days of this, some sooner. Then you can ease back into his regular food (kibble can be softened a little for easier consumption, and warmed a bit too) and if his butt seems too irritated from excessive pooping, you can put on a little diaper ointment around the outside of the anus.

This homemade hamburger/rice mixture is very similar to canned ID diet that the vet often prescribes for upset stomachs. There are medications to control diarrhea but I presume that this loose stool bit is just from excitement at a new place, lots of new stimulation, and hopefully he'll settle down in a short while. When stools are loose, avoid all dairy (except small amt goats milk if you're still using that/breeder's suggestion)and avoid any oils given orally.

Yes, the breeder used a dewormer product and the stool sample I gave to the vet came back negative for parasites. But we'll test again at next week's appointment.

Thanks!!
