sleep aggression ?

We have two rescue English Bulldogs. Our male is about 6 1/2 years and we have had him for about 4 years. Our female is 7 years old and she has been with us for about 2 years. They both had a myriad of issues when rescued and have made some nice progress.
Recently, I have noticed that when my female is about to fall asleep or sleeping, she will sometimes wake up suddenly, bark loudly (she is rather quite) leap from where ever she is sleeping and lunge forward. An overwhelming majority of the time, nooone is arond her when this happens; so it is not as if someone accidently woke her up. It looks like she goes from sleeping to attacking something in seconds. She does not do this when awake. When she is awake, she is pretty low key and enjoys lounging. When we rescued her we were told she did not get along with kids and/or women, they believe that she was teased by children (currently does well with kids and women). When she has had blood work done nothing has been out of the norm. All thoughts/recommendations/comments are appreciated. Many Thanks happy.gif

how are they checking it?? Baer testing needs to be performed

If it is mostly thru observation, it will be hard to tell....I'm just thinking that dogs that have hearing problems sometimes snap or bark when suddenly woke up.

To those who understand no explanation is needed. To those who don't no explanation is possible.

Thank you - we will have it checked again

Thanks for your response. She is on ottomax (ear meds). Her hearing was previously checked but will definitely have it looked at again.
