Skin rash - possible vaccine reaction

My 4 month old bulldog just broke out with a nasty looking rash/red bumps. I first noticed the day after he had his 15 week puppy vaccination where it was mostly just on his chest. It is now mainly on his belly where it is the worst looking. From what I can tell he doesn't seem to be itching at it and he is still eating and drinking normally.

I called our vet the day after I noticed the break out and he said it wasn't necessary to bring him in and he called in a prescription for generic Keflex - 250 mg 2x a day. He didn't recommend any additional treatment which concerns me a little bit but he is also a vet that specializes in bullies so maybe he knows what he is talking about.

He currently gets Precise large breed puppy food 1 cup 3x a day and I have started adding show stopper supplement since the breakout.

I have made another appointment to see the vet on Tuesday out of pure concern that it doesn't look much better and I am worried that I am not doing enough.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How long will the infection last?

Is there a typical duration of this type of infection? Also, what do the sores look like as they are healing? I just want to make sure that I can recognize if it is getting better or worse.

Thanks for the responses!

rash

That does look like a staff infection which would require Keflex. If it were an allergic reaction to a vaccine it would be either localized at the site or a generalized urticaria which is an itchy hive rash. Here is a good idea for the next time the vet cannot see your animals. Take a picture if possible and email it to him/her. I did this with vaginal smears when we were monitoring ovulation. I have a scope that takes pics and then downloaded and emailed to my vet. Just a thought if you are concerned that he treated with an A/B without observing!

any change??

I just read some pages on this type of infection
and the medication sounds like what they suggest
might make you feel better to just have the vet recheck your puppy though.
the meds should work
did not say how long it would last..
you can google staph infections in dogs on google..that is what i did

lots of info on staph infections..
very common in dogs too

I would guess within 24-48 hrs of the anti biotics the redness should be resolving and the raised sores should be drying up. If you have a vet appt Tuesday I'd keep it so they can examine it.

Improvement

Well our puppy has finally showed some signs of healing. Most of the really red sores have dried up and now the scabs are falling off. The vet also recommended giving him a bath and using Selsun Blue once a week. He also prescribed temaril-p for the itching which has me somewhat concerned because he is drinking and urinating a lot. He has peed in his kennel which he hasn't done for a few months. I have cut the pill in half tonight because I also read where if you just suddenly stop giving this type of medicine it could cause more problems. All in all I think our puppy is getting better but I hate giving him all these pills...
