Re: separation anxiety

I had a boxer who had very bad separation anxiety, I got him a bulldog to keep him company and it took the need for him to have me around 24/7 off, her calm nature kept him at ease and he stopped destorying the house and panting while I was away at work.

Josie goes nuts when i get home

When she does this i turn my back to her until she winds down and then I give her my attention. she isnt destructive, just a worry wart that i wont be home. i tried the short trips and that helps too. go out and take a wlak around the block and come back so she knows she isnt being abandoned. do this ALOT! it really helps, and of course safe things to occupy her times, she tires and sleeps and then poof! mom is home.

My foster girl had a bit of separation anxiety when I first got

I would do little things like leave the TV on when I left or a light on at night. Her anxiety wasn't extremely bad and she's mostly over it now. I've never had a dog that required medication for anxiety though.

it takes time.....

since bringing in a few rescues...they seem to have issues....so what i did...the first week i would step out the door for 15 min...or waited till the crying barking stopped went in ingoring the frantic jumping....had the dog in question sit and wait gave a treat...i did this for longer and longer period of time....also i have used rescue remendy that helps keep them calm....never make a big fuss when you first get home...try to ingore untill the dog has settled down..then give a treat....
i feel their more worried about being in a crate for hours than being left alone so if their crated for a long time make sure the crate is large enough to stand and move around...a safe toy to chew on....some of the things to do also...leave a radio or tv on....they hear voices...and this occupies their time they dont feel so alone....
