Scabs on skin?

We went to the vet last week, they said to change his food and it was an allergic reaction to wheat, corn & grains. We changed his food but it seems like the scabs or sores are spreading. He is shedding like crazy. We called our vet who is not a bulldog vet (there are NONE in the Boise area)and they said to bring him back in this afternoon. Thought we would post this out here to see if anyone had ever seen anything like this before and had any other options or ideas for treatment. See the attached photo.
Thanks

Thanks to everyone for their responses today. This site has been so helpful with everything we have had questions about pertaining to our baby.

So we are back from the vet. It is staph and they put him on a 10 day antibiotic that should clear it up.

Ask your vet to give you an Rx for Simplecef 200mg

and bath him every 3 days with Chlorhexiderm for 2 weeks. Should clear up fast. I had the same exact thing with my Great Pyrenees.. I couldn't get it to clear up. I had him shaved, went to a different vet and she prescribed this and it worked so fast. Thank God. he was a mess.

Good luck.

Calcinosis is symptom of Cushings disease that is

sometimes caused by long term use of steroid meds like prednisone.
Calcinosis cutis causes calcifications to form on skin that make scab like sores that are very hard and very itchy. Our first bulldog Rocky had Cushings with calcinosis that was caused by extended prednisone use.
It doesn't sound like your dog was on prednisone long enough for this to be an issue. Although dogs can develop Cushings naturally, without use of steroids it is not very common.

Re: Has he perhaps taken prednisone for extended

He took very small dose of prednisone when he was around 12 weeks old for only a week to help rid him of a tail infection. What is calcinosis?

I've not heard anything about ab's in young dogs for staph

There are some ab's that shouldn't be used on young dogs but keflex should be ok.

Has he perhaps taken prednisone for extended

lengths? If so, you might want to consider the possibility of calcinosis.

Re: Could be staph

They did a scrape last week and said it was a mild case of staph and because he is only 5 1/2 months old really were hesitant to put him on antibiotics. But now that it has spread and the shedding is still bad we are concerned. Any one ever heard if that is too young to be on antibiotics for this? We are fearful that it will never go away if we don't treat it with something.

I asked because

demodectic mites migrate to warm areas on the dog. Head/Neck/armpits.

I would def. have the vet scrape but now I'm not so sure it would be demodex.

Let us know how you make out.

Where on the dog

is this affecting him? It's hard to tell from the pics.

Head/Neck area?

Jacinda is right it could also be staph. Impossible to tell without a scrape.

P.S.

Make sure they scrape more than just one spot.

Hi Devlan

I didn't see a photo but if you are bringing him in, ask them to scrape him for mites. He may have demodex. Hair falling out is a big indicator. Best wishes!
