Hi all, I'm bully-sitting a rescued bulldog for a friend and my friend is on a cruise and is not reachable. I know the bulldog has allergies but her belly is REALLY red and quite warm to the touch. Its obviously sore/inflamed. She will scratch herself so bad, it causes her teats to blead a little. I feel so bad for her. Do any of you know if there is anything, ointment, powder etc. that I can give her to calm/cool the irritation. Would Benedryl help? Thanks in advance!
Do you
have any calm coat? You can also put hydrocortizone cream on her belly, which works pretty well. I would be surprised if she could reach to lick it off?
try some diaper cream or bag baqlm or aquaphor
my boy has that sometimes,
maybe a cold towel will help...?
in the summer , i would freeze wash clothes so they would be ready to rub all over the bully when we came back from walks..
if you are worried about the bully eaiting the calamine, then try this too... or just run it under some cold water and wring it out all the way first... although i haven't seen many bullies that could reach their tummies to lick it.. just watch her if you choose to use the calamine...
i have used medicated gold bond powder too for my other itchy dog , its mentholy so maybe it would help with the itch? whatever you do , just dont do too much or otherwise it will irritate it more... is there a clean cold surface she can lay on? like hardwood/linoleum/or tile?
maybe she rubbed it on something that she allergic to? plants , detergent?
if you suspect its something more and maybe internal ( if she uncomfortable, panting, drooling, lethargic, throwing up, diarrehea...) you better bring her to the vet to be safe.
try the aloe vera.....
it will work.....give one bendryl if your nervouse...see if it helps....if this is on her tummy dont lather it on just a little and yes dont let her lick it off......
Is Calamine toxic?
What if she licks it?
Breathing problems?
Thanks. Could the Calmine cause a breathing problem or the Benedryl? I would really not want to risk that. Someone I know suggested trying some Aloe Vera on her belly. Not the kind you buy in the store but the actual plant. If Calmine is safe, what if she licks it? Is it toxic?
Re: Really red belly ????
Oh yeah, if she's scratching herself to the point of opening the skin, she has an infection... commonly a secondary result of allergies.
Re: Really red belly ????
If the pup is scratching like crazy, I normally give a nice cool bath to calm the skin, and like Judy said Calamine
i would give some....
benadryl....wilson is 52lbs a give him two tabs then 3 hrs 1 tab depending on how bad of a reaction he is having....
some calmine lotion (what you use for posion ivy)rub on the belly
but if she starts to have breathing problems...off to the vet asap....
