Otto has had diarrea (sp?) since Sunday following an overnight traumatic stay at the EVet. Would Balmex be good for his raw, swollen anus? Does anyone know if prednisone can cause diarrea? We made the mistake of giving him all wet food instead of his usual kibble (something easier to swallow after having been intibated). Now the poor dog has perpetual diarrea. Today we started him on chicken & rice with kibble to try and get Jim back on track... Still liquid poop (with a little blood).
Any suggestions on this whole situation would be helpful.
Thanks!
probably needs meds and bland diet for a few days..
call the vet and see if he will prescribe over the phone without seeing him. Metronidazole is what I would guess the vet will prescribe. I like to give that and feed Hills Prescription i/d (canned) for a few days when Roxy gets irritable bowels. Happens to her every time we go on a trip. That med and the bland diet clears her right up.

Saw Vet today
We saw the vet today. They were wonderful about getting us in quickly and keeping Otto calm.
We have him on probiotics along with bland diet and pedialite for electrolite replenishment. The also did subcu. Fluids for hydration. Today's diarrea has been less frequent (2hours apart instead of 1).
The latest one was projectile, which is new; but at least it was more poop like and less mucos like.
It's been an exhausting 5 days! The end is not in sight, but we hope soon.
Thank you for the advice and support!

If he's at least 40lbs and 6mos old, give him an Imodium tablet
that is for human diarrhea...it should slow down the cramping and hopefully let his BM's firm up. Continue the hamburger and rice diet for 2-3 days...remember its one cup raw rice (makes 2c when cooked) with 1/3lb lean meat (ground beef or ground turkey). Yes, its mostly starch and yes, its meant to be that way for a short period to bind him up.
Pred has never caused diarrhea for my bullies but maybe for some others? If he's a youngster, I think there's Imodium for Children and you can follow the dose for a 12yo child. HTH

We all need a break
Thank you Elaine. We gave the Immodium and are anxiously waiting for it to do it's job. We held a warm compress on his anus (to no avail). We rinse his bottom with warm water after each BM, which he hates, instead of wiping to avoid further irritation. We have also slathered his anus with Balmex. This has been exhausting!

It's not uncommon for them to...
have a little blood from diarhea since the colon is irritated, but if the blood gets heavy or comes out without the stool, it would be wise to have him checked. The immodium should help.
