question signs of eye infection? what drops to use?

my puppy, I think has eye infection. The white parts of his right eye is slightly red and although he does not produces lots of tears, there are some yellowish greenish discharge in the morning and later on in the evening. He doesn't squint or anything acts like nothing is bothering him. Do you think this is an eye infection and what meds work best and in the meantime what can I put on to relief the redness? He has a vet apptmt this friday. I have tried visine one drop once a day and it did help the redness, but after 8+ hrs the redness would be back. Any help greatly appreciated.

Dee-

go to the vet and get proper diagnosis from the vet..

may need some B & P ointment for a few days. Get it checked and treated rather than trying over the counter stuff. That way if it happens again you will know how to treat it without a vet visit.

Trust me....get eye drops from the vet

If your puppy is not making enough tears that issue needs to be addressed. With Mason his eyes don't either and I just paid out of pocket for eye surgery (huge $$) and he still is not out of the clear. Do not use Visine as this dries up the eye even more. Use clear eyes or something to add tears to the eye so that they are not dry. I use Visine before going in the ring to remove redness but as soon as we are out of the ring he gets clear eyes and I put 3 drops in each eye. I have done this even before we knew he had dry eye.

If the gunk is yellowish yes he needs drops from a vet before the infection gets worse and he gets an ulcer. Ulcers are bad bad bad, and happen quickly. They can be prevented though with the right care.

Terramycin is good to use for eye infections. It does not contain a steroid that would worsen an ulcer or scratch to the eye. Terramycin can be gotten w/o a prescription, Tractor Supply even carries it for about $10 for an 1/8 oz. tube. Use it 3-4 times over a 24 hour period.
I've found the ointment stays in the eye longer than drops do.

I'm sure there are others. Tractor Supply and likely the other 'farm' chain stores or local pet supply store will have it too.

When you see that a catalog or online supplier wants a prescription to buy something for a dog or cat, go looking for the same thing under either horse, bird or fish listings. You'd be amazed what can be had that way.
