and even went to competition level with some, but all had a basic 8wks of class and I think its almost "a must have" for this breed. Bulldogs are strong and can be stubborn/willful so you need to learn how to make obedience "fun" and rewarding and they also need to learn to listen with the distraction of other people AND DOGS around, as in a park or vet office, etc. You cannot simulate these setting at home or in your own yard. After completing a basic round of OB training, you might want to go ahead and prepare for the CGC also (Canine Good Citizen designation)which is certified by the AKC. Its not "a title" precisely but rather an acknowledgment of good behavior and reliability and it can go a long way in situations where you might be renting a house/apartment and they are reluctant to allow you in with a Bulldog...the dog has a CGC and he looks good...maybe you want to go on the a Therapy Dog program to visit hospitals or nursing homes, etc....a CGC is a good start in that direction also...lots of choices that start with basic Obedience training.
If one wants a mannerly dog, that is. My Mr. Higgins was in puppy pre-school at 9 weeks, then we have done 4 courses together after that.I have taken 3 myself without him. He is the sweetest boy and will literally do anything I ask of him. (well, not wanting to come home from a walk I do not consider a behaviour problem, he`s just a bulldog) He has never been yelled at, spoken harshly to, punished, or anything negative at all. The time invested will repay you for the life of your dog.All dogs deserve their owners to be trained this way. However, remember this: IF YOU WANT THE PERFECT DOG, YOU GET A STUFFED ANIMAL

it has helped a lot. Just teaching them the basics makes them better companions. There is a list of vets on the home page under health topics, all are recommended by bulldogsworlders.

your local bulldog club too!! There is one in South Florida, who I am sure would be a wealth of knowledge to you, especially when it comes to local businesses such as vet & training clubs
good luck and have fun, I love training - my first bulldog, a rescue - has advanced obedience & rally titles as well as an agility title and my pup (who will be 9 months old this month) is active in training too (I'm in the Tampa area)
