Prego Female?

just wondering what is some of everyones first signs of your female being pregnant...my girls first breeding was Dec 5th and the second was the 7th. Right now she is having a tablespoon of natural yogurt and at night she has a tablespoon of cottage cheese. she has been on wellness for 2 years. thanks in advance for you input!

you've got mail

pics would be great!

Thanks in advance!

thanks to all who responded

I appreciate the advice and have seen some of the changes you've talked about. She has definate swelling of her teats and has just recently, the last two mornings, not finished her meal. I will continue with a small amount of yogurt only because it's really not enough to hurt.(maybe a tablespoon) She is also having an hard boiled egg twice a week. Any other comments are appreciated in advance. Feel free to give advice, any is welcome!

Agree...

My vet and 3 Bully breeders told me the same. A gradual switch to a good puppy food and cooked liver and that's all we did. If you are worried about enemia do the test 1st, folic acid tabs only if you have clef known in your line but even then it will not guarantee to prevent it. Ultrasound or x-ray 30 plus days to check pregnancy. Good luck!

ok, we're linked....

Hershey, started acting weird..

like not going up down stairs easily...her teats began to grow, she stopped playing hard with Boss, the daddy of the babies..she also started to "show" the roundness in her belly...i have pics from her pregancy from week one past delivery....

Re: Prego Female?

I take my bitches to the Vet 5 weeks after breeding for an Ultrasound to confirm pregnancy. About that time I start to see some fullness in their tummy, and a bit of enlargement in their teats.
If your Vet doesn't have Ultrasound capabilities, an X-ray can be used after 49 days to check for skulls and spines, and maybe give you a rough count. BUT - I had a bitch years ago pregnant with only 1 pup. Two Vets missed it on the X-ray and told me she wasn't pregnant. Long story short - the pup was DOA and I almost lost the bitch too.
When pregnancy is confirmed, I start to slowly increase the amount of food given and to slowly transition over to puppy food. The last week or so you want to feed her frequent small meals, she will be more comfortable and less likely to puke from too much in her stomach.
Hopefully you have been giving her a Folic Acid pill every day from the time she came into heat. Also I would NOT give her cottage cheese - look at the label and compare it to yogurt. It has 4 X the salt and that much salt isn't good for her. No salty treats either, i.e. popcorn, potato chips, french fries, etc. as it 'may' contribute to water pups.
Keep her exercised throughout her pregnancy by walking her daily, of course the last week or so her walks will be shorter and slower. Your goal is to have her still fit and healthy going into surgery and for the stress of nursing pups.

I definitely agree on avoiding salt, both in jerky-type treats

and cottage cheese, etc. Plus I've had a very respected vet tell me that supplementing a bitch with calcium before she begins lactating is not good (unless its part of a multi-vitamin)...its when they begin nursing that they need the extra calcium. Many here give folic acid tablet to help prevent cleft palate (tho its mostly genetics IMHO) but its an easy-enough preventative to do. happy.gif
