first of all..I got a call late from the vet yesterday. I got another deaf student. this time a deaf bulldog. I met him today, he is the same age as Gus. he lives just around the corner from me and that is pretty cool. he is black and white and deaf since a puppy likely as well. I plan on going to help him out this Saturday for a bit. I know I can help this bulldog..no doubt. been there and done that. the same thing though, they just thought they had a stubborn bulldog..not a deaf one.
it is a very alone feeling dealing with a deaf dog. so I guess we will set up a support group to go out for coffee and just talk about our dogs. now that there is 2 deaf bulldogs.including Gus, the deaf dalmatian and the deaf boston..that is 4 dogs and 4 owners... I also gave them my telephone number if something comes up that I can help them. I swear I missed my caling in life..lol who would have thought in 6 months or a bit longer that I found out that Gus was deaf..I would be helping other deaf dogs.
the last day of the deaf dog study is this Sunday. no talking to the dogs from the time they get until they go to bed. we are adding a bit of a twist this weekend and see if the dogs can pick up the signs without all the treats. treats first off and then just a pet on the head after that. it works for Gus so it might just work with my other dogs too. the vet is doing the same at her house.
Gus goes back next week..not sure of the day yet..for his last day to spent at the vets..for this study.
also the vet suggested that maybe we can add the deaf dogs that I have been helping too in the study in some way..since they are all deaf since birth..
what does Gus think of all this..
NOT MUCH>>LOL.
he is sleeping on my feet ..as I type this.
and me too..makes me smile too..
nice to know you are not the only one that is going through this and also nice to be able to help another dog.
with 4 of us now, it should make for very interesting convo's...
and yes all because of ONE deaf Bulldog
I would never have gotten this involved with not having a deaf bulldog..guaranteed. deafness is not something that I knew anything about before finding out with Gus.
Gus has taught me more..then you can imagine
thanks for the support
makes me smile too
Hi Ela1ne...I maybe did not explain myself very well..lol
the deaf bulldog that lives close to me.. he lives a few streets away in my subdivision..but with this subdivison is huge and really spread out. he is definetly confirmed deaf..she called the vet because she was having major issues with training and so on. same thing as the other dogs, barking, hard to train, does not listen...and so on. I guarantee you on Saturday it is one bully that will learn some sign language. she just found out that he is deaf. I personally think that teaching a true deaf dog signs in one day needs to be added to this study.
odd that both him and Gus took 2 years before we figured something simple like that out.. I seriously always wandered but was not sure what was up..knew something was not right..but not sure what. the baer test has been done on all the dogs.
what makes it rather interesting is all the dogs are confirmed deaf...all deaf since puppies likely.
when I offered to help these deaf dogs..did not expect to see that many of them..in this short of time..but that is ok. maybe the vet and i can do something to work them into the bigger study.
I think it would be cool together and talk here and there..the dogs meeting each other I think will be at later date. I am not sure how well they would all just get along together. the big difference in the dogs is that all the other dogs but GUS are from one dog families.. Gus is great with all other dogs but will have to see before we do some introduction unless it is on the leash but even then I would love to sit and talk and be prepared first.
the vet is very involved soo far..since all the dogs are patients of the same clinic.
I hope it does help more deaf dogs in the future all of this to be honest.
been a true learning experience...
thanks for listening and support
such a help
I think it's so wonderful that you are able to help others with deaf dogs. All this because of one deaf bulldog. It makes me smile.
Interesting thought about neighboring deaf bully
I would think your vet would be interested in meeting this other bulldog who has been like "a control" in the same timeframe...the owners have not received confirmation that he was deaf, and the dog has not previously been taught communication compensations such as hand signals. A get-together with the other deaf dogs and owners sounds great, especially to observe the dogs interacting.
sorry forgot to put in Pat...
I changed computers to type this and wow it is very annoying..this new machine..lol. forgot my name but it is me...Pat
