Ok, Nacho is six months old. I have his morning routine down pat and weekends as well, I know when he has to go out and he tells me. The problem is, he is in our rec room downstairs all day while my husband and I work. Seems no matter what when hubby comes home he loses control of his bladder. J says he does not make a fuss over him at all and not sure why he does this? I limit his water during the day, he pees before we both leave the house, I leave puppy pads in the room as well.
Do u suggest a belly band for during the day???
we have a stream of pee or he will pee when he picks him up to take him out

NOT sure if this is the same thing..but........
I had a boston that had a spinal injury called a spinal infarct. you can search the net and see if that if what you are dealing with there. sounds much the same thing.
she had a major problems getting her bladder to work out right after the spinal injury. they loose control sort of things when things excite them and so on.
was hard to deal with and takes lots of patience but truthfully she felt better then I was at the time.. lol to be honest.
did not stop her from doing anything in her life. she lived to be 19 and she did wonderful even with her spinal injury.
takes time to heal.
I tried the belly band with her but she was terrible with it. did not like it one bit. she was already house broken at the time, so I just crated her and then picked her up and took her out and so on. she was fine as long as she was crated..never messed in there ever.

thanks Ela1ne
we will of course keep working on it.
I do notice that he does not do this for me upon waking in the morning. I take him directly outside, he pees, poops, gets praise and I take him back inside. And he is crated for 7 hours while we sleep.... hmmmmm. Could be the fact he does not want to soil his crate though...

with this additional issue I think you need to concentrate
on getting him to use the wee wee pads provided for him while you are away. It may be that his previous neurological limitations affect the tight control on his bladder to where he pees upon awakening/moving around almost involuntarily...and the short bursts hint to me that he's trying to hold his urine but unable to do so. Patience.

I think it's too long... 8-9 hours :(
not much we can do about that right now at least.
He pees in bursts and while walking, he is a rescue with a damaged spine and drags his paws and has balance issues. His opening looks good. Urine color and smell is normal.
Doing well with the positive reinforcement and following your advice.
Is the belly band something you would suggest for him to learn to hold it a bit longer or would that not be good for him. It's really our fault to have to leave him that long not his.

belly band should help along with training
and I don't mean negative training, but positive reinforcement when he does well. He needs to learn commands like "wait" repeated a couple times while you walk him directly outside, and then "Good boy! Go potty" and then of course, "Good Potty!!!!" while he's peeing so he understands the word potty with the act of peeing.
I don't know what success you've had with the pee pads in the past...does he use them at all? Maybe you need to dribble a little urine on them so he understands this is where he's supposed to add his urine to the pad. For now, it sounds a bit like he's holding his urine too long, not vacating during the day and perhaps just awakening when he hears you come home. Have you checked out his urine...is it very dark or odorous? Does he pee in a long stream of liquid, or short bursts. Is it very cloudy or nearly clear? Could be that he has a problem with UTI or very small opening at end of the urethra (a problem that some little boys have, easily corrected small surgical correction).
