You can try melatonin or benadryl....
Bubba is also scared to death of storms and hides in the closet shaking. I usually make him go potty before the storm begins b/c he wouldn't go outside during the storm, period. I read that melatonin works and I tried it and it kind of calmed him down. The vet says you can use that or 2 adult benadryl (Bubba is 76 lbs). Unfortunately, thunderstorms come with the territory of living in Florida. We've been back 5 years and he hasn't gotten used to them at all. Luckily we're moving to Boston in 2 weeks and I'm glad he won't have to deal with them anymore. Good luck to you and Champ.

you have two options
1- teach a reward based system that will associate thunder storms with a positive reward. Take the dog, forced with a leash- not carrying him...he already has you fooled. Tell him to potty and give a reward. Practice this each time there is a storm. Take him out, he hears thunder , reward him..do this over and over until he associates that storms are not bad.
2- teach him to go on a pee pad and use them during storms.
All my dogs are taught to pee on pee pads because sometimes at shows i am stuck upstairs and its a pain to walk my lazy butt downstairs in the middle of the night. So they pee on a pee pad in the bathroom and i throw them away in the trash the next am..

hmmm...
Was he ever outside doing potty when the thunder happened?
Paden is so frightened by them, she barks and barks. I put her in my bedroom, with a fan on high (for noise even though we have A/C) and i put on some mellow music on low. She still barks but it helps. I wish i could help more.
I would suggest lots of praising with treats to go outside but i'm sure you might have already tried that. Best of luck.
