Thanks to those of you who have replied. So far we are not seeing improvement since yesterday's vet visit. We were up all night again. At around 7:00PM the projectile diarrea began. For the next few hours he was unable to hold it in even to make it outside. This completely upset Otto and led to him trembling and panting. He eventually calmed down, but this continued on and off through the night. He doesn't want to eat and will drink a little. Vet wants us to call this morning to update, she may have him back in for more subcu. fluids and will consider antibiotics. Blood and fecal tests all came back fine, so we are still thinking colitis brought on by stress from Saturday's EVet trauma. His anus and surrounding area is completely raw and swollen and he runs from us to avoid having it gently cleaned.
This is truly exhausting! Thank you for your caring and support.
Tracy
I can certainly concur that many breeders know Bulldogs
better than your average veterinarian; their behaviors and responses to various situations that don't always call for medical intervention, or at least a visit to the vet. We will readily tell you when you need a doc, but often times we experienced owners, and certainly JP is more-than-qualified here, can help you! Utilize these resources.

Glad you got him on the Metronidazole (Flagyl)
That usually clears it up for Roxy. That along with canned i/d for 5 days, usually does it.

Saw Vet Again Today
We went ahead and put him on Flagyl. Dr. also gave more subcu. fluids. We are fairly certain there is no obstruction. We have Xray from EVet visit on Saturday and he hasn't been out of our sight at all since coming home Sunday. Vet also did thorough physical exam, which we feel good about. We are fairly confident it is stress colitis. He's been through A LOT since Saturday. Including an overnight stay in emergency followed 2 days later by a surgical consult for entire brachiocephalyc ( sp?)system.
Dr. recommended Vaseline for bottom, but we do have Prep H so we can try that next.
THANK YOU to all for being caring and helpful.

try some prep H or some vagisil....
around the anus area...prep h has a steroid and will stop the burning and itching...and either will sooth the burning....
this should not be goin on for more than 48 hrs....your baby has a bad bug or has a blockage and it sounds like a blockage....were x ray taken??? just because you did not see him swallow anything does not mean he did not....get a x ray...this is not good for going on so long....

I'm going to chastise you a bit because I've known your dog since before he was born (being the breeder of his mom) and have know his breeder for many years..I've met you guys a few times..you have a wonderful little guy there and you SHOULD be utilizing your dogs breeder WAY more than you have been. It's not as if your dogs breeder is inexperienced or doesn't have access to people like myself that are in the veterinary medical field. Your dogs breeder is a GREAT person and my best friend. That being said, I've been in the veterinary medical field for over 17 years now...blah, blah, blah. Take it for what its worth from here
#1... be VERY WARY of ANY veterinarian that uses the term " Brachycephalic Syndrome" or anything that remotely applies. This is some new "catch phrase" being taught in vet schools that loosely translates into " It's a short-faced dog and I don't know what's going on." FACT: Bulldogs can overheat for very unknown reasons. FACT: NOT EVERY BULLDOG NEEDS A SOFT PALATE RESECTION!!! I could NEVER state that enough or plainly enough. There are many vets that " schedule" Bulldogs for such with NO basis, other than it is SUPPOSED to be a routine thing with Bulldogs. I really truly cringe at how many vets have no idea as to what they are doing other than they assume it is the norm for the breed. I personally have had one Bulldog that would work himself up and overheat on a dime for no reason, and he is related to your boy on the sires side. This is not fingerpointing..this is just to say, some work themselves up to a tizzy and it has absolutely NOTHING to do with their palates or any other Brachycephalic non-sense. I know how old your boy is and it would be VERY unusual for him to go this long and suddenly need a palate clip...whatever moving on..
#2 Feed Otto a bland diet for no less than 3 days. Bland meaning, boiled rice and boiled hamburger or boiled skinless chicken with maybe a pinch of cottage cheese. Gradually increase his kibble until you have him on his regular schedule. Once you have his stools regulated, his anus will return to normal.
#3 The trembling and panting was likely due to his stomach hurting and nothing more.
Good luck and please utilize your dogs breeder in such situations...you have a CLEAR advantage over most on these boards in that you are involved with someone that knows or has access to answers and your breeder is truly concerned and wants to help. You are more than welcome to shoot me an email as well. Kisses to Otto

Is he on Flagyl or something similar?
If not he needs to be on it now.

for his bum apply some medicated Vaseline
it has a cooling effect and he will feel better. Is his diarrhea greasy looking and has a weird foul smell? My puppy who had diarrhea when he came to me, vet put him on a dewormer and albon, that helped, but he was eating his own poop if he got to it before I did and it was gross. As he gets older, he no longer eats it and just a few weeks ago, he had projectile diarrhea with blood and mucus and his stool looks like you pour oil on it. I gave him PanacurC to deworm him again for 5 days and his poop firmed up. I guess he still had the bacteria in his intestines when he was eating his own poop when he was little and something caused him to have diarrhea, but the panacurC worked.
