New Pup with mild Spina Bifida

HI!! I was referred to your site by a member of bulldogbreeds.com because I just recently became the mom to a beautiful little red/white male EB with a mild case of Spina Bifida. My boys name is Farley, he is 13 weeks old and is already the love of my life (shh...don't tell my Boxer Ida) Farley is not incontinet in anyway and has full use of his back legs, although he does tend to "hop" when he's super excited.

I am looking for information, and mostly help from anyone with a SB dog as to what our future might hold with our special boy.

Here are a few pictures of him and his "divet".

Re: The "hop" is not uncommon in youngsters...

LOL I never knew they "hopped" it's really funny to see him going across the yard. Thank you for your help!! There is so much to learn about these little guys.

Re: Usually they do not get worse as they get older,

Thank you...I am glad to hear that. I know we are very fortunate for him to not have anything wrong...and I hope it stays that way. I just really did not know what to expect at all with him. Many hugs and kisses to your cute little guys.

Usually they do not get worse as they get older,

I have noticed my oldest boy got a little better. He can feel his stool sometimes and squats to poop.
If he is showing no signs now, he probably never will.

The "hop" is not uncommon in youngsters...

so I wouldn't necessarily consider that a fault...most hop some when excited, and also seem to run while moving sideways...this too evens out as they mature a few more months and calm down a bit. happy.gif

rear end

I never said he had a weak rear-end. He keeps up just fine with our Boxer. He just has a "hop" in his little step when he runs.

Re: just because he has a dimple doesnt mean he has SB

I am aware of this, however that was his diagnosis and he has more than "just a dimple". Farleys little "blow hole" is as deep as the tip past the nail on my finger.

I am very grateful that Farley does not have the symptoms many SB dogs do, I was just hoping to come here to gather more information on my little man. He has been seen and x-rayed by two vets that said the same thing.

x-ray

Yes, he had an x-ray..but no dye. He is getting neutered around 7 months as well, we are not risking passing this on.

question for the vet

Did the vet x-ray him? or do a spinal tap with dye?
I have a bitch who is 6 now. She has the divot too but has never had any symptoms. I had her x-rayed and the vet say there was no sign of SB. I chose to spay her on the chance she might have passed the defect on. I wish for you a healthy life for Farley just as we've had with Cookie.

just because he has a dimple doesnt mean he has SB

and if he has control of his stool/urine your better off then many.

As for being weak in the rear, it could be an age thing.

Question....

I am really not familiar with this breed as Farley is my first but are there other conditions they could have that could "mimic" Spina Bifida?

Re: p.s, he is such a cutie,

The breeder we got Farley from took him in to the vet.She gave me the letter from the vet with regards to his condition and my vet also confirmed it. We came across Farley when we were looking for a pet quality bulldog since we have a pet quality Boxer we did not need a "perfect dog". Since Farley was not showing any signs now and I work in the Veterinary field, I was thrilled to take him on as a new member of our family.

THANK YOU!!

I saw the pictures of your babies...man are they cute!!! I would appreciate ANY help you can give. Other than the fact he has a "divet" and a hop in his step when running, he has no other issues related to his condition. But I am sure we are in for issues later...LOL Luckily, I work for a Vet so he's in good hands!!!

p.s, he is such a cutie,

Could I ask how they noticed he has spina bifida without having any issues? Just wondering what made someone have him checked out if he was not showing any signs. That is fabulous for you and for him that he has no issues. Congratulations on your new boy, and I love his name.

Hello and welcome! I have lots of SB babies...lol

There are a few of us here that have babies that have spina bifida. Feel free to ask any questions, and we will let you know what works for us. Also a good place for info is to join the SBbullies yahoo group.

Welcome and I am sure you will find some of the people on this site have a wealth of information to share. I know there are a few SB babies on the boards.
